Thanks everyone! It was just a dive to check out the critters and yes it is off Long Beach, Ca coast. We got very lucky with visibility.

Yes, I too was expecting 1/2 dress divers (hopefully women)!
Beautiful photos, I don't think anyone on shore realized how big those rigs really are. |

Yes the rigs are huge. I photographed divers for perspective. I usually try not to get divers in my pics. Driving bottomless would be painful in SoCal with leather seats! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Something to look for the next time you dive a rig: a lot of times fish will orient themselves visually to the "reef," and in the case of round structures like rig crossbeams the coral grows on the bottom. A lot of fish will just follow the curve around, and swim upside down! First time I saw this ins the Gulf of Mexico I thought it was pretty bizarre. Very nice photos.

Beautiful!
What was the goal of diving there? I assume you work on one of those platforms? |

Actually the fish were going every direction between dodging predators and there was some up and down water currents from the water hitting the pillars. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Good looking photos, thanks for sharing. What boat did you use for the oil rigs? Looks like you have nice viz as well.

Oil rigs are basically artificial reefs that attract a lot of marine life. They also are a mess environmentally (all drilling mud is toxic and has to be hauled off and dumped in designated areas) but if the owners comply with the laws the pollution is greatly minimized. One good thing about divers visiting such sites is they can notify the authorities if there's some illegal dumping going on. As for a "goal," isn't enjoying the marine life and observing a massive structure you can basically fly around and examine enough?
