I don't think chronographs need dates - the Speedmaster Date is a good example of messing with perfection.

Because Rolex chooses to not unbalance the dial.

Many watches do not have a date function.

I don't think they should necessarily add a date to the Daytona. Purists tend to lose their minds if you make changes.

A daytona 2 with a date would be fine. Might actually interest me in a Daytona.

Thanks guys for agreeing. I love the Daytona the way it is and use it for what it was made to do and wear where it was made to be.

It really is a timeless design

So much prefer a chrono without a date.
For me the Daytona and speedy pro are perfect in that regard...

Between the two of those watches that is very solid camp.

For now I'm happy enough having a date and larger case on my Tudor. Maybe by the time I'm ready to buy a Daytona it will be a Date-tona.

Thanks, Tom, it works quite nicely and meets most of my needs... Here it is on the wrist. It approaches 200g so it has some heft which I know you like.

Date absence on Daytona

Most chronographs of the time, including the reference of the references, the Speedy Pro, did not have a date complication as the events to be times, car races would take place over one day, mostly.
Pretty complicated caliber to develop in the first place, so may be that technological limitations, design and legibility had all something to do with this.
Once Rolex set on that course, there was no turning back...

I'm def one that would prefer a date function on the Daytona... The Sub has a date on it, do people time their dives in days?

Haha, good metaphor.

What's more satirize is the word "day" is hidden in the name, somebody help me!!

The fact that the Daytona doesn't have a date (and no cyclops) is the reason I bought my Daytona.

Daytona is chronograph and it is for timing whereas for example Day-Date displays the date and weekday. Daytona is watertight for 330 ft because it is not for diving whereas Submariner is diving watch. Watches are meant for different purposes.

I'll admit, I am normally not a fan of Tudor's, but wow, I really like this one!

That would depend Sir on the type of vehicles and the nature of the race - would it not?

The Daytona has not had a date since it was launched in 1963 - so after 52years it never has and never will and never should have - it's design is locked down by its own history, beauty and worldwide recognition. Rolex quite simply got it so right back in 1963.

While we are designing the Daytona II, let's add a GMT hand while we're at it.
Oh snap, Breitling beat us to it!

Rolex began throwing out a date option for the Submariner with the 1680, so don't see the big deal if they did with the Daytona. There's no technological barrier, the first automatic chronos like the Zenith El Primero had a date way back in 1969. Rolex even used that movement in the Daytona.
