For boots, hard to beat RM Williams (Australian brand). Something for most occasions, and they seem to survive almost anything.

Hope this helps

Footwear recommendations

If you want a dress shoe that is timeless and will last a decade while not breaking the bank, go the Alden or even ferragamo.

If you want the best of the best, including fit, timeless design, and will last decades, go with Berluti.

Anything else; Gucci, Prada, and the like are simply overpriced amateurs. Any shoe that glues their sole on to the uppers, are practically the same and the name dictates the price

There are others in that same price range made from the same if not better quality and more so ylish in my opinion. But opinions on style are just that, opinions. The main point however is there are other options which include Enzo Bonafe, Vass, and Alfred Sargent.. All three of these certainly have their strengths as well.

I am it disputing that there are fantastic shoe makers that I didn't mention, I just gave the range. Alden is a world class product at a respectably price and it goes up from there. My point was that people should stick to shoemakers. Companies like Prada, Gucci, and even some lower end Tom Ford shoes are made in the same fashion, with the same materials, as shoes 1/4 of the price

I understand however my strong preference for the other shoemakers probably got in the way. I did get your point but I also wanted to mention the others as well.

I agree with Renato, I am not much for the glued shoe approach.

Driving shoes should do the trick for you...Ferragamo, Gucci, Tods. I like Allen Edmonds as well, but it's usually a dressier shoe. Crockett and Jones even nicer, but again, dressier.

You can end the thread here. I had a ton of knee and foot issues until I discovered good shoes. I have 15+ pairs of AEs in everything from drivers to boots to dress shoes

Agreed. On a topic like shoes, I think rankings are difficult to put together. At best we could make a list of brands that are generally good.

Of the less famous brands, which do you recommend trying first?

Plus, even within a single brand, I'm not sure quality is consistent. I've heard that Church's used to be a lot better. Meanwhile C&J can vary a bit depending on model and bench grade vs. hand grade. Allen Edmond's quality varies a lot in my experience - I once received a new pair with tool marks all over. Meanwhile some pairs of AE are the best $300-$400 shoes that money can buy.

For that price range and for that style I would agree.

Opinions may vary with regards to which are people's favorites, however amongst those who have experience with a number of different brands there is room for a lot of agreement actually. Especially with regards to which shoemaker does certain things best and which tend to use the best materials.

Thanks, Dan. These are the 4070s, made specifically for Alden San Francisco. Compared to the standard 4060s, these are on the barrie last, have a 360 degree welt, and have speed hooks. They're all small details, but really help to make the boots a bit more casual.

I recommend the brand Carmina, around $500, but the shoes/boots have a more attractive last and better leather quality in my opinion.
