I LOVE the blue dials available in platinum.

I'm also surprised about the debate over scratches. I would have assumed and still believe that platinum would wear better.

I'f I'm going to go gold then I would go yellow or red. Why spend the $$ on gold if it looks just like SS but heavier?

I have a WG Daytona but only because the meteorite dial only comes that way and I didn't want to do a swap.

If I was able I would choose a Platinum DD over a WG one personally. I much prefer the ice blue dial. If it had to be gold I would go for the rose gold with a chocolate dial before WG.

Hey guys, what's harder, Fords Clear coat or Porches Clear coat?

I'm not going to get into technical details,I'm not a metallurgist, I'm just a guy with a lot of free time on his hands. If you want a very scratch resistant watch, get a Tegimented SINN or a DAMASKO.

OP should try each on for size in the metal and decide.
I did, and made an objective decision based on various pros and cons.
No one can make that decision for him, it's his purchase, for what ever criteria he's considering for his purchase.

Any/all thoughts/advice/prejudice/experience/pix greatly appreciated!

For me price would play a large part in the material however i would go fluted bezel I think polished will show lots of light scratching in the wrong light and i think with such an high value product the fluted bezel will pick up the light especially halogen which gives a better amount of bling which the watch deserves in an evening it is also original and timeless

Good luck with your choice

You can have every available WG dial option with the platinum models. Only the ice blue dials are limited to the PT references.

Think of a gold wedding band or college ring, that over time the bottom of it begins to wear thin from everyday friction and wear. Platinum tends to be much more resistant to that type of wear. If platinum is scratched, the metal pushed to the edge and end point of the scratch, where on gold some of it breaks off and is gone.
A jeweler explained this to me once really well. A scratch on gold is like cutting bread or a cookie, crumbs are permanently lost; whereas, a scratch on platinum is like cutting meat very little material is lost.

Felix, you're correct It's the matter of finding a WG dial and doing the swap.

I like Platinum....no LOVE Platinum. Several times I have almost pulled the trigger on a DD 36 in Pt. Each of us have our own reason why/why not we own or would like to own a WG or Platinum DD.

Things I like about the Pt DD:
-Heft. I really like a heavy watch.
-Best of the best in Rolex lineup.
-Stealthier than YG or RG.

Things I do not like about the Pt DD:
-Wish the 36 had ceramic inserts
-Smooth bezel (this used to be the only way to tell it was Pt before the blue dials)
-Blue dials. Sorry, just not a fan.
-Very pricey

That said, I still lust after the Platinum models

I own the Platinum and YG Day Date II. I looked at the WG for a second to my YG but could not pull the trigger for what was to me the same watch. I think the Platinum is on another level for wear, weight and looks. I love the ice blue dial. The only thing is the significant price difference but for me it was worth it.

Hardness is defined by resistance to scratching.

Annnnd here is a good resource for hardness (HV, Vickers scale) for precious metals.

https://www.hooverandstrong.com/cast...specifications

MitchSteel is right that WG CAN be harder than platinum, but most alloys are fairly equivalent, with Pt harder than Palladium alloys and less hard than nickle alloys (which some people are allergic to)

Does anyone know what WG alloy Rolex uses? Other watch companies? Keep in mind that there are trade-offs like brittleness, although that matters more for setting a diamond than it does for a watch.

There's actually a palladium-cased watch out by another company, seems neat.

Well, I learned something!

This also helps explain how F.P. Journe can use 18k Rose gold for almost every part in his movements.
I thought I had read on this forum that Rolex Pt is 95% Platinum and 5% Ruthenium (with perhaps minor amounts of other metals as part of that 5% but no nickel.)

And that WG is 75% gold 25% Palladium (in the Platinum family) and again minor amounts of other metals for hardening as part of that 25% but no rhodium.

I would stick to the WG.

I personally don't like the smooth bezel and the plat version is 12k more. Not worth it in my opinion.

I don't think Felix was suggesting that a swap is needed. Platinum DD 36 can be ordered with all the dial color options of WG, with the addition of ice blue.

Not quite true...... Buy what makes you happy, I just wanted to kick the bug, I used to question why anyone would want a watch that looked SS, and then when i felt the heft of the Platinum, I don't know I just wanted to have a crack, I would never buy new but I did get a good deal on a used one. Probably 4 months into the ownership experience and really like it just seems fresh whenever I wear it.

All this talk of hardness and wear, lets face it neither are going to get a hard life.

FYI I love my silver dial, flies so far under the radar, the reflection of the diamonds in the sun is also way cooler than i expected.

I went WG since it has the fluted bezel.
Don't get me wrong, I wish I could get an ice blue dial and fluted bezel together.... I would gladly pay the platinum price.

The Fluted bezel on my WG DD was my deciding factor as well

platinum is the superior metal vs any white gold. ive even heard people claim 10 and 14k white gold is better than platinum but ive never heard anyone with credibility say that. . i guess you could argue iridium is more noble though and argue pure gold is more malleable.
