Well if they have one sitting there it means none of their "regulars" wanted it and it should be up for first come at that point

If they were really stuffy they would demand to see your watch, car keys, bank statement, and your address before letting you even look at a Rolex.

I bet they say that to all their customers on all their watches; promotes a feeling of elitism and an ever shrinking customer base.

If I really wanted the watch, this is what I would have done.

I would tell the lady ok, I'll buy two watches right here right now.

She would have to sell you the one you want.

Slap it on your credit card, walk out the door, turn right around and return the one you didn't want.

Then tell her... there are so many ways to skin a cat.

This kind of response just begs to have you 'take the piss' with the salesperson.
"So - this model is hard to get? They had one at X, Y, and Z recently."
"Have you been selling watches long?"
"Pity, I guess it must be tough for you to meet your sales targets - you DO have sales targets?".

I actually encountered the same mentality in Cabo re: a SS Daytona. Wanted me to buy a watch for the wife before selling me a Daytona. We walked out without purchasing anything. Ironically had he sold me the Daytona I would have had to buy the watch the wife wanted as well

I agree! It is nonsense! It even gets worse, went to their second location (La Cantera) and got...THE SAME RESPONSE! so it is a 'corporate answer'

I know the feeling. They try to hard to push for the sale, when pulling is so much easier.

Did you see a line of people waiting to buy one? I supposed not. Some business people are so silly, it's amazing they can even run a business. A statement like that pretty much guarantees a customer won't ever return to that store.

Let's see if I understand this correctly...

If I walked in as a new customer I would be offered zero discount and they would tell me we can't sell to you because you are a new customer.

Resulting in perhaps one of our trusted sellers walking in and being happily offered the same watch for ~20 % off.

...And the secondary market is born.

Makes perfect sense.

Some people just don't understand business... I understand they are trying to portray exclusivity, but instead they are just pushing good customers away.

Have heard this in the Chicago area as well.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people act like they are doing you a favor by letting you buy a watch as opposed to the other way around - being genuinely grateful that you would give them your business in the first place.
