Some people don't seem to understand what stereotype means.

Especially those that think wearing a blue black gmt has any association with batman as a stereotype.

Let's see.

The only rolex stereotype that ever really stood out to me was a greasy mobster in an ill fitting suit wearing a yellow gold day date. I have no idea where that association came from, but that's the image that comes to mind every time I see a yellow gold DD.

I've also heard that anyone wearing a submariner is a professional diver because only professional divers wear submariners.

Specific models don't really perpetuate stereotypes, but as a brand, the average Rolex owner stereotype is something we see on this forum all the time.

We all know those guys. The ones that insist that rolex is the best thing ever. The ones who think that 904L should be classified as precious metal, or that it takes a year to make a single rolex, or that every other brand is horrible for marketing too much without realizing that Rolex spends more on marketing than any other brand in the world.

Well, not trying to one-up you Paul, when my lap times didn't improve after buying a Daytona - I went and got another and they kicked me upstairs.

Racers with more than 1 Daytona follow the hungrier ones who want their first.

People are always asking about this.

Is the Day-Date for old men?

Is yellow gold for old men only.

Am I too young to wear a DateJust?

The answer is that people do stereotype as a kind of social "shorthand" to negotiate the world.

Sometimes they make judgements based on watches.

Whether or not a person allows a stereotype to have merit is completely up to the individual.

If you wear an Explorer and are afraid to climb a stepladder, no one is going to confuse you with a mountain climber.

TT Subs have a bad perception with me due to one ex friend who turned out to be a legitimate and well documented thief with about 40 convictions and 15+ years in jail. He was also a car salesman, actually General Manager of a Cadillac dealer (how anyone gave him that job, or any other job is beyond me). Anyway he did a bunch of stuff again, I was on the bad end of a couple of things that only cost me time but nearly MUCH more, and I stopped communicating with him right before he went to jail again. He just got out after 2 1/2 years away and low and behold he's selling cars again. Sorry to those of you who have the TT Sub with a blue bezel and dial but thanks to this loser you are all under suspicion. OK not really.

There was an article on Forbes that talked about why people buy rolexes, I seem to remember that the argument was that at the beginning you buy one for status, curiosity, etc. later on it was because youve searched and found they were actually good timepieces, kept value, comfortable, etc. And at some point it was very common to see watch execs using them on their day off....

I thought it was accurate, my experience exactly.....

Any thoughts?

Yes. It's true.

Submariner- it means the owner works/worked on a submarine

Datejust- for this guy just the date is enough. To check the time he uses the mobilephone

Yachtmaster- the guy has a yacht

Daytona- the guy lives in Daytona

Explorer- the guy likes mountains/tracking

Oyster Perpetual- these guys like to eat oysters every day

Daydate- these guys are presidents and they are so busy that they often forget what day of the week it is.

Seadweller- these guys do deep sea diving

Milgauss- mad scientist that works on a nuclear plant

Revision no1.

Submariner- it means the owner works/worked on a submarine

Datejust- "the only Rolex is the datejust"/"I want ppl to know that Im wearing a Rolex".

Yachtmaster- the guy often dreams he has a yacht

Daytona- the guy loooves the look of the subdials. Alas hasn't worked out how to unscrew the pushers yet

Explorer- the guy likes mountains/tracking but lived all life by the sea.

Oyster Perpetual- these guys like to eat oysters every day

Daydate- these guys are presidents of countries. So busy that they often forget what day of the week it is.

Seadweller- these guys watch a lot of National Geographic. They dream of doing deep sea diving one day.

Milgauss- mad scientist that works on a nuclear plant

GMT- the guy fancied a more colorful Submariner. Hasn't worked out what the blue/green hand is for yet.

I have noticed over the years that men who wear a 214270 (39mm Explorer) tend to be rather good looking and has such usually have adoring wives and a string of jealous mistresses lusting after them.

Also I have noticed that they dress well, are articulate, intelligent and excellent raconteurs. They know how to order wine in a good restaurant and the next day they will either climb a mountain, dive from a cliff into a deep lake without worrying if it will harm their Rolex.

These guys are super cool and a credit to all mankind.

Regards

That would actually be the stereotype for the colored Hulk/Kermit/Smurf subset of Submariner guys (who can't figure out what 24-hr hands & bezels are for, how to use them, or what "GMT" means).

Revision 1a to your list.

Submariner = 99% certainty the owner has never been scuba diving, but bought a dive watch anyway to dream of being James Bondish.

When I see an older white gentleman with a yellow gold Day-Date with a bark President bracelet or diamond bezel, my first thought is that I bet that guy has his own golf cart.

Cheers guys, I remember watching this when it came out up on the big screen and then I took no notice of the watch he was wearing. Just goes to show you have to be interested in watches to really notice.

No. Because of one loser who tried to screw me out of thousands of dollars when I see a TT Sub I think of him and have a negative feeling, as unfair as it is, for the person wearing it. It's a short term thing for the person - moments, but it's a perception. And I don't dislike the watch itself... it isn't the watches fault he's a loser.

And FYI... this guy was house sitting for a neighbor of ours and he stole a rolex she owned and gave it to his girlfriend!! WTF!!!???
