+1...the apple watch despite its innovative concept is little more than a high-tech appliance & most appliances depreciate over time...when was the last time your Maytag increased in value or desirability?

for those old enough to remember...back around the early 70s, the Pulsar LED watch was once considered state-of-the-art. celebrities & fashion trendsetters were often seen wearing them...traditional high-end mechanical watches were supposedly doomed to oblivion.

guess what happened...the Pulsar ran its course & are virtually worthless today. meanwhile, the traditional Rolex continues to thrive.

with no intention of offending AW owners...the apple watch looks kind of 'lightweight' from the standpoint of ruggedness & durability. there is also something kind of 'sissy-looking' about it...just saying.

Like many, I have partaken of the "Apple Koolaid" and love their products. I generally give into the lure of instant gratification when a new Apple product is launched and bought my Apple watch when it was released. Since I got my Apple watch, I have only worn a Rolex twice. AW suits my daily life perfectly. However, would I ever consider it more of a luxury watch than any other in my collection (including Cartier quartz models!)? Heck no! I love it for what it is, how it works for me and how comfortable it is to wear. And at it's price point, I don't care if it gets banged up (which amazingly, it hasn't) or fails. Some rumors have the "new" AW version due out later this year which then makes mine the "old, soon to be obsolete" model. What I love about my "real watch" collection, is that I can't tell what year my Submariners are from or SeaDweller or any of them for that matter. They don't become obsolete and I love how solid they are and as others have said, they can be liquidated for cash... anywhere! So yes, I'll continue to wear my Apple watch until it breaks or won't recharge anymore. Then I'll dust off my "real watches" and start wearing them again.

Smartwatch technology will have to make a quantum leap before they become more than a novelty and a fashion statement.

Sales aren't going anywhere but down, based on everything I've read.

Smartphones themselves are starting to take a hit, too, as people get tired of the same old same old year after year.

I'm an Apple junkie. But passed on the AW, simply because my iPhone does everything that the AW does. If Apple don't innovate soon (are they about to buy Tesla cars?), they'll turn into one-trick monkeys (huge reliance on iPhone sales, which is faltering).

Look at Alphabet Inc (the new holding group that includes Google as one of their companies); these guys are really innovating! https://abc.xyz

I hate my Apple Watch. I hate that I now have to choose between practicality and luxury. I can't just slap on my Rolex anymore without a small voice in the back of my head saying: your Apple Watch will be more usefull today on your wrist.

My Rolex tells me the time, my Apple Watch tells me ten times more and I hate it for that, because I love my Rolex, but I can't argue against my Apple Watch. I mean, my Apple Watch even helps me find my iPhone whenever I forget where I left it. You just can't argue against the versatility of a smart watch.

The only way the Apple watch was considered "luxury" was because of some ultra rare edition that went for $12,000 or so. A normal Apple watch is $600, so it's not even an apples to apples comparison (no pun intended). It's just a manipulation of data to even consider an Apple watch as luxury.

On a side note, for customer loyalty Apple watch got a 58 and Rolex an 85.

Next year Apple watches will be worth nothing, especially the limited edition, but a Rolex will still have the same value.

So, I've owned Rolex Subs (SS no date, date) and TT (Blue) since the age of 22 and loved them. The most recent was the the TT model which I adored. Fell on hard times during the Great Recession and had to sell it to pay the bills, and it devastated me.

For a period of time I've owned the Casio G-Shock Tough Solar Atomic time 200m watches and enjoyed banging them around without care. Love 'em still, but kept denying the WIS in me. I've owned an Omega SP 3570.50 for the past 15 years and kept it through thick and thin because I love the history/pedigree. Still, never got over parting with the Rolex, so the first chance I had I purchased a new one (a few weeks ago), the SD4000 ceramic, and I will never part with it or the Omega -- 'til death do us part. Just bought a Hirsch leather strap for the Omega just to mix it up. Both will get wrist time. The Casio too, but only in high-risk environments.

If the Apple watch was completely self contained, it would be of more interest. At least with a Rolex, I don't have to keep a Rolex in my pocket to get full functionality out of the Rolex on my wrist.

I don't think it stands a chance if it becomes a stand alone device. Instead of being a phone accessory that some people will buy (just like a blue tooth earpiece), it will be in direct competition against the phone. The phone wins that fight easy.
