A story about my first Omega, then Rolex shortly after..

Welcome, funny I went the other way and traded my 114060 for the SM300. I agree about the braclet but love the watch on leather and a NATO. Both great watches.

Great first post. I agree with almost everything you wrote, with the exception that the SM300 will never be a classic in it's own right, since it is a remake of a classic. The SM300 is a reproduction of the original 50's watch with many modern improvements Omega developed. The exact same thing can be said about the 114060. So, imo, both watches have "classic in the making" credentials.

As you said, emotional decisions and human nature can be hard to rationalize, so, in the end, the important thing is that you have discovered which watch makes you happiest - seems like a simple thing to accomplish, but these forums show a very different story, so congrats on that as well.

All in all, I think those two watches could easily co-exist, as they are very different, aside form being divers without a date. The SM has a much more vintage feeling, colored markers, PCLs, a thin bezel, etc. They don't seem redundant if your passion is dive watches.

Nothing wrong with the PO been there done that and loved it but the no date Sub has that clean three hand look and is awesome. Loved that watch

I agree that both can become classics! I would however view the 114060 as an evolutionary step and the SM300 as a reissue. Does that mean anything? Not necessarily!

I don't think it's necessarily an upgrade of any kind. Seems like both can coexist. The Omega SM300 touts one of their best in house modern movements and did a great job with the Liquid Metal bezel to bring the bring the classic back to life. I know I wouldn't get rid of mine when I get around to picking up the 114060. Both excellent pieces.

I own the same Omega and have a LVC. I bought the LVC first and now I wear both equally. I like the differences that the SMP brings.

Funny you mention that. I just met up with him for my BLNR last weekend and am still grinning ear to ear whenever I wear it. I'm going to have to mention you next time to force him to drive down to San Diego.

Great post, and awesome watches. I'm in the same boat--I own both. I did it the other way: I bought the Rolex 114060 first, but couldn't stop thinking about the Omega 300! They may both be 300M divers, but they are vastly different watches, each with unique merits. To me, both are keepers.

Dont get me wrong people, I love both these pieces, they were my finalists after all, I'm also not saying that one is better than the other generally.

I just thought it interesting to write the (illogical and emoitional?) thought process behind trying to select the "One Watch to Rule Them All". Then you realize the dwarfs have created an awesome watch down in the dungeons and the power balance is shifted.. I see that a lot of people on TRF try to gather them all :D

The Sub looks stunning on you!

Yesterday I found out that swapping out and reinstalling the bracelet is much more difficult on the Sub than the SM300. The Bergeon tool which worked perfect on the SM was too wide for the Sub, resulting in needing to use it parallell to the springbar, it was a bit slippery.. Tried on different NATO's, but ended up reinstalling the bracelet. Might switch around a bit in the future, but guess I need a new Bergeon first.. Not doing yesterdays balance act again!

It was the ceramic PO. I used to have an orange PO, still might get that one again was so much fun.

I do love my SM300. I think the dial is clean enough and the bezel understated enough to make it my dress watch.

I totally concur on your feelings about the history of the design. For the same reason I have a GMT (BLNR) and Breitling Navi. They show that classic designs from the '50s are still going strong today (kind of like me).
