I run a country club and have a piece of friendly advise. If you are going to bring your Rolex to the course, leave it on your wrist. DO NOT put it in your golf bag and especially do not put it in that convenient "valuables pouch" that you got as a gift at a Pro-Am. Thieves are notorious for targeting unsuspecting golfers. They will dress up as golfers and roam the locker rooms and driving range. They see your Rolex (it always seems to be that brand!) and observe you taking it off and putting it in your bag. You go to the range or even park your cart in a non-viewable area while going to putt on a hole and your Rolex is gone. Does not happen all that often but it absolutely happens. Have probably seen it happen at least 10 times in my career. I leave mine at home when I play because I don't like the feel of it when swinging the club.

Golfers with their Rolex
If at my club it's in my locker locked up. Usually I just hide it in my car if visiting other courses. I don't understand how people can play wearing an oyster bracelet. I'm by no means a pro but a decent golfer and the only 2 pro golfers I can think that wear a watch playing are Phil (Celini) and Bubba (RM 038) but to those that say a mechanical watch won't hold up if Bubba can play in a tourbillion and not break a $500k watch I'm sure we don't have anything to worry about. Now on the way to the tee everyone of those guys has a nice timepiece but 99% take theirs off but I think it's more to do with comfort than durability of the watch.

The other day I accidentally smashed my BLNR across a wall VERY VERY HARD, I looked at my wrist with 100% certainty that it was going to be broken and there was dry wall chunks and particles covering the watch, but the thing was 100% pristine after blowing it all away, if that knock didn't damage it then nothing will. |

I don't like to wear my Rolex on the golf course, for the metal ball marker on golf gloves scratch the watch. One of the golfers in my regular group wears his Rolex all the time and has no issues.

Chaps
I know very little and have no interest in golf. To me it is just an expensive way of taking a long walk. However about 20 years ago I was a guest at Wentworth golf course and was given a days private tuition by a professional golfer called Paul Broadhurst. Back in those days, if a golfer won a match, they were given a Rolex and most of them had more Rolex than what we have had hot dinners. I noticed that Paul was wearing his Rolex ( a SS Sub) and these professionals really know how to swing a club and wack the ball. I asked him if it was prudent to wear a Rolex under these conditions and he just said yes. I cannot see Rolex presenting high profile golfers with a Rolex and quietly advising them not to wear it whilst playing. The best publicity comes from the fact that the professional golfer is seen wearing a Rolex as a natural part of his life and not fretting about it. Just remember that Rolex are revered because there are many tales of them being used for years under exacting conditions, so there is no need to molly cuddle them. Regards Mick |

Comfort, feel...

On the other hand, no pun, some guys can't play wearing a glove... Given that your hands are the only thing connecting you to the club if something doesn't feel "right" to you it will be on your mind during the swing and that's how it can have an effect. |

I wear my Speedmaster or one of my Panerai's. I don't think I would wear an automatic...

I remember reading about Dwight Eisenhower's DD, which recently sold at auction. It came with papers certifying official service primarily due to effects of Ike's swing on the old movement. Fun little anecdote.

I don't wear a watch when I play. In the bag or leave it home.

I don't have any issues wearing a watch when I play but wear a GPS watch which gives me distances to front, center and back of the green.

You will never see a pro wearing a watch with a metal band while playing. You will almost never see a pro wear a watch period. I know Phil wears one... I don't see any reason to wear one while on the course. Where are you going? To each their own...

I'm going to pay closer attention to the golfers' wrists when on the course. Many can be seen pulling one out of their bags as they head for the tv interview, not so sure about on the course.

I was once told not to wear a watch w/metal bracelet while golfing because it would promote stretching it. I have always taken the watch off and put it in a Crown Royal bag, and in a secure zipper pocket in my carry bag.

I wear my Garmin GPS. Super light and comfy and of course, super valuable to have the yardage on my wrist.

I wear mine when I'm playing on vacation, because I don't want to leave it in the room or have it get banged around in the bag. At home I don't wear a watch whilst playing. It has never bothered me.
Saw a pro kick his bag walking of a green, Faldo said "there goes another watch" Never been a Phil fan but he used play in a DD on a strap, and recently in a Prince. While they can get what they like and it's not a big deal to the pros, if they can stand up to round after round and 1000's of practice balls a week, I'm sure the weekend round in mainly sports models does not have a negative impact. |

This thread reminds me of the "sleep with the watch, or not" thread... like that one, looks to be split right down the middle here, too

The bracelet will only stretch over time if you wear it loose... I guess I'd just buy a new bracelet? Or send it to Michael Young? Either way, I just don't care... These things are meant to be worn... And honestly, getting a new bracelet after, say, 10 years would be kinda cool, somewhat like a new watch!

I agree with 'Daytona88' and feel the advice given is prudent. I have worn my Sub to the course once and placed it in that nice velvet lined pouch in my bag. This was a mistake. It bugged me so much that I wasn't able to enjoy my round.
Hopefully you can learn from a painful lesson I was reluctantly taught - in fact it still upsets me. I took my eyes off my bag once upon a time for about 45 seconds and my beloved Scotty Cameron putter found a new home. I loved this thing. I pride myself on situational awareness and still to this day can't tell you how they did it - but the point is I flipped out and was extremely upset for about a week over a $250 putter. It wasn't the $250 as much as it was the memories on the many courses I've played with that putter. I felt like I could putt blindfolded with that rare putter (David Duval Model that he used at the British Open). I can't imagine what it would feel like to lose a $7k Sub that is a time capsule for me of sorts - all my memories of holding my first child for the first time, watching my wife graduate, our promotions, family moments, etc. I lost that putter about 6 years ago and I'm still a little upset about it to be honest. Insurance on the watch is there if I need it, but I would rather avoid using it. Hope this very painful story helps you gents. I prefer to avoid the situation and leave the watches at home. |
