Have you ever wanted to downgrade a Rolex?

I sold an AP ROO and went back to a Rolex as my daily watch. I really miss the AP but circumstances required me to sell but I will have another one day. IMHO not a downgrade per say but it was going from a $30k+ watch to less than a $10k watch so financially it was a downgrade.

Been watching a few car shows and auctions lately and have a real hankering for a Tag Monaco and Chopard Mille Miglia.

I had a Monaco on my wrist while waiting to chat with my AD about the new daytona.

It's just so damn cool.

"Downgrade" is the wrong word. "Change" is more appropriate in describing what you're feeling. Yes I've felt the need to change watches - mainly going from steel to PM.

I can't recommend the Monaco enough. It's a great watch for watching car movies.

I told my wife earlier today that if I had gotten a 39mm Explorer as my first Rolex, it would have been my last - Unfortunately for my wallet it was my fifth. If I ever have to liquidate, that one will remain standing.

When a watch doesn't fit your personal style, it won't feel right. I personally can like a $4k watch as much as a $14k watch. How much a watch cost doesn't make me like it any more.

Another vote for change. Very few can stick with one watch forever. Hang out here long enough and you might become one of many chronic flippers.

Yeah, sure. Within the Rolex family there is no upgrading or downgrading.

For you, I think the 39mm oyster perpetual would be perfect.

I think I went from loving busy more livelier watches to loving simple clean and understated watches over the years. To add to my sickness, as much as I love watches I cannot own more than 2 or 3 or I feel overwhelmed. How odd is that?

I've never had that feeing before I love my watches. It's my true passion and I'm always going for better more expensive watches. Maybe you should check out the exp II polar. It's brushed good sized and no one ever noticed it.

It's all around underplayed watch.

To the OP: I'm considering something similar. Though unsure if I'm doing the right thing... I bought a 114300 39 Rhodium dial last year. Was my first Rolex and a big deal personally. Since purchasing I've been debating if I should have got the Explorer1. It somehow fits my lifestyle/dress much better than the 114300 - dressing much more casually now. Since the updated Explorer1 has landed I've been getting serious thoughts about making the jump. Tho what troubles me is internally both are the same. Same movement and features and in many ways very similar in terms of look also. Selling my 114300 (taking the price loss) then putting money into getting the Explorer 1 for essentially something that's very similar save dial + clasp... Worth it. Downgrade? Upgrade. I don't know lol I may be romanticising the idea of owning one Rolex I'll wear 'for ever' lol

x2........sometimes less is more. Unless you walk away from this hobby there is always the "hope" that the next purchase will fill all your needs and be exactly what you are looking for from a watch.......then you start thinking about the next one 😃.

I have been into watches for about 5 years and my first luxury watch was a 2500 PO. It was bought before the birth of my first child. This got me into watches.

I bought my first Rolex a DJ II fluted blue roman. I thought that is what I wanted, but I was wrong. It was just to dressy for me so last year I flipped it for the BLNR. I like my BLNR, but recently I have been looking at it and it's just a little to much. I actually do not use any of the functionality of the piece just liked the black and blue bezel now I almost feel that is to much. I still do like it though.

I have been thinking of downgrading to the new explorer (doubtful don't really want a black dial) but like the simple look. My other option would be going back to the DJ II but now smooth bezel with probably the Arabic numbers. I like how it's fairly simple. I will admit I like my watches having the date. As classic as the Sub is I don't want that because of my PO.

So there is my story I really am in the mode of my BLNR is to much for me, but I still want a nice Swiss timepiece.

I would love to here your opinions and maybe other options.
The only downgrade or upgrade in most all modern day Rolex is the case style and price.

For me this is very difficult to choose, but I know what you think right now

Go to very simple timepiece for your everyday used and enjoy is the best choice!!!

I've thought about getting a black bay 36 for the office. Not necessarily a downgrade. Mostly I want something more discreet.

Yes...don't do it.

Speaking from experience. I have done this a couple times. You'll regret downgrading it and it can mean spending more to get back. Perhaps put it away for a bit and come back to it after a few months to see how you feel.

OP, I agree with others who say that "expensive" is not a synonym for "better". If you go from a watch that leaves you feeling ambivalent to one that makes your heart skip a beat then it's an upgrade. If you're lucky enough that money isn't a limiting factor then why not go for one (or several) more that can fit your mood while holding on to your current one? How about one of the new Oyster Perpetuals. They have very clean, simple and elegant looks. You could always liven it up with a colourful dial. I'm rapidly being seduced by the red grape one at the moment but I'm aware "pink" isn't for everyone.

Jodie Kidd, model turned racing driver was wearing one while I watched her show on a Bond special, driving the DB5, DB2/4 and Lotus "Submarine" and that really got me thinking, altho I think her wrists are probably bigger than mine. Also Ricky Gervais wore one when I saw his stand up and Martin Freeman's Dr Watson wears one on Sherlock.
