Very touching. You're uncle was lucky to have you and it surely sounds like you were lucky to have him. Cherish the memories and let the watch remind you to live each day the very best you can, just as your uncle did!

Everyone, your kind words have brought a huge smile to my face tonight. Thank you. It means the world to me that so many have appreciated the story of my uncle. In the past two years I've lost two of the three closest men in my life growing up. Luckily my father is still healthy and alive, and will be for many years to come. Having my uncles watch and grandpas ring mean the world to me, they were both huge influences in the man I am today.

To those asking about where I got the engraving done, I apologize but I'm not sure. I can ask if anyone lives in the St. Louis area and wants to know. It was my father who, as the executor of my uncle's will, got the watch serviced, polished, and engraved out of the estate. I know it was done by the same engraver who engraves the St. Louis Cardinals' jewelry. He was amazing, he mocked up so many engravings on throwaway pieces of metal for us until we settled on the perfect design.

Again, I can't stress enough how much it brings a smile to my face to see people appreciating my uncle's story. He was a truly inspriring man who, at the age of 54, left this world entirely too soon. It's an inheritance I wish I didn't have, but one I am truly honored to receive. In his memories he lives on, and each of you reading this post are keeping that memory alive. Thank you. John would be truly taken aback with joy at just this small amount of people reading about him and appreciating his story.

I'm a long time lurker on the forum but your story has prompted me to make my first post. I am looking to purchase my first Rolex next month, a new 114060 Submariner and my hope is that in the future, when the time comes I too can replicate this fantastic gesture made by your grandfather and leave my watch for my son or grandchild.
Sorry for your loss but I'm sure your grandfather will be watching as his watch continues its journey through life on your wrist.

Chaps

This is the sort of thread that makes me genuinely proud to be a Rolex owner.

The OP is showing the true spirit of Rolex, he is wearing it mainly because of its family history and it is obvious he will keep it for life and more than likely pass it on to another family member when his time comes. The Rolex is, and always will be, a great part of his life.

The OP has set a great standard and I for one, salute him.

Regards and Respect

Mick

I'm sorry for the loss of your uncle. Very young ...

I hope that Rolex always reminds you of him and I think you did the right thing by having it engraved.
