Maybe you could educate me on why you would want to film the purchase of a watch?

The million dollar question right there. I clicked on it, then came to my senses and realized I have literally zero desire to watch a youtube video of someone else buying a watch...especially one that's close to 20 minutes long.

Hehe. I did the same thing... It just seemed liked too much fanfare for buying a watch. I felt like I was being enticed and I like staying right here on TRF

some people like to film or photograph milestone moments. I think it's cool to watch - no pun intended

From the about section of the video:

"EMKWAN TV is a weekly vlog channel set up by EMKWAN and BEELAH to document the move to the Middle East. It features video content on a range of topics including vlogs, experiences, food, advice, lifestyle and much more."

He's got over 17k followers on YouTube. People are watching his videos and obviously find them interesting enough to subscribe to his channel (thousands to tens of thousands of views on many of his videos). Folks who have this many followers/subscribers on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat are finding ways to monetize this (ads, product placement, etc.).

This Rolex video has over 126k views - it's obviously coming up quite a bit in Rolex video searches. His auto-related videos come up in searches for exotic vehicles (lots of eye candy for sure!). Good for emkwan to gather a following this large for whatever reason he decided to start a vlog. I'm sure it's paying off somehow!

To answer the original question, filming himself buy a watch may not seem like a big deal to many here, but it's more content he can put on his site that his subscribers will watch. Posting it here (after it was originally published in Oct. 2015) is another way to add views and potentially more subscribers.

;-) eye for detail. Well done! I vlog for two reasons: 1- to document my life in parts for when I grow older. It's an amazing feeling watching back your life and key milestones of which this was one, years from now!
2- I run two YouTube channels. The other, where the unboxing and first impressions of the OP 114300 is on EMKWAN REVIEWS, is to help others. I wished there was more video content on the model before I had bought.

Both videos have also got the attention of Rolex and Omega now. Which is a bonus.

Good for you man, I must say I have a fair bit of respect for that. You're using new media in the way its intended and are successful at it, way to go. Whether all here care for it or not, enough people do and that's all that matters. 👍

Cheers and wear your OP in good health, oh and let us know how it world out with Rolex and Omega, sounds interesting.

All the best

Plus you can make some income from YouTube in the process. I enjoyed the vid.

I don't see any issues. I enjoyed the video. It's good thing I didn't film my first Rolex purchase. I was in the store more than a couple of hours as I obsessed back and forth between models I had been considering.

Actually it's really pretty simple. So simple that you probably overlooked it. He is 30 years old. He is a millennial. That generation, for the most part, is heavy into technology. If you care to take the time, which it sounds like you might not, there is an entire YouTube channel filled with millions and millions of these type of videos you could check out. They call them vlogs. Some of these young people make 1 hour videos of them just walking around experiencing life. He shared his here because we are all Rolex enthusiasts. One thing I have learned in my life is that what some people love others think is stupid. I would think that the vast majority of people on the earth would think that we are all absolutely out of our minds crazy to spend the amount of money we do on a watch. I'm sure there are even some millionaires that would think that. Obviously YMMV.

Thank you for the kind comments and indeed you're absolutely right! I originally started making detailed tech review videos and was asked by many of my then subscribers to 'vlog'. Lol at the idea of it many years ago but now that channel has overtaken my review channel. The Rolex purchased in the video was a direct result of the money I made online + purchased for the achievements I had that year - Esquire Middle East's YouTuber and Digital Influencer of the year.

So while some may think it's odd... It's what's current. Besides I love how some of my subscribers have got into mechanical watches now simply because I share my positive opinions about them online.

Despite the previous negative comments, I think that this is the first documented first rolex purchase on vid, and I thank you for it. Personally I have heard and read a thousand post about the AD experience and stuff, but I've never lived it myself as I have purchased mine from a trusted seller. So thank you for sharing your experience. Great watch, enjoy

Manny

I share your puzzlement. I think it is all down to social media and the urge to let a mainly uninterested world know what you are up to.

I took my wife out to dinner last week and a young couple came in and took a snapshot of the restaurant. They then sent the pic off to facebook. They then took snaps of the menu and the starter and then the main course etc etc.

Personally I found it all rather amusing if not a little bit stupid.

Of course you could say we encourage this rather stupid trend as we are subscribing to a forum where watches are shown on holiday, in the car, up a lamppost etc etc.

It is just a sign of the times I am afraid.

Regards

Mick

I would not go as far as video-recording the whole purchase, and I usually buy from pre-owned watch stores, but I like a make a picture of me and the Sales person, as a souvenir of a successful deal. Some of them agree, others don't.
I like to see a smile on their face after a tough negotiation.

I was pumped when I bought my Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre in Singapore on vacation, and asked the salesman to take a photo with me. He declined. I was surprised and a little disappointed. So I didn't even think about trying to take a picture after my recent Rolex purchase.

I invited the AD salesman that sold me my BLNR to the WUS/TRF GTG in Atlanta tomorrow. If he shows, I'll get a picture with him then.

I want to comment on your less than stellar AD experience in Abu Dhabi:
These sales clerks, (often Filipinas because of their English language skills), work six and a half days a week, usually split shifts, start at 8am, finish at midnight with a 2 hour break in the afternoon. They live in poor housing, often four to a room, sometimes two to a bed. They are paid slave wages and yet are expected to show up to work freshly scrubbed clean and smelling nice.
Taking all this into account, you can understand why they are not always hyper-enthusiastic. Sometimes they are just plain exhausted.

I did like your videos.
Enjoy your watch, I'm getting one like it, but can't decide between the Rhodium or Blue dial.

Oh, I see, thx for pointing that out. I imagine one who usually pushes pretty hard for discounts (i.e. me) would hardly be eligible then :/

Cheers

Maybe it is an age generation thing. I see people sat in a restaurant taking pictures of the meal before they eat it ! So taking pictures of a watch purchase seems odd but maybe not to others.
Makes you wonder what happened when he bought his first video camera, how did he cope without recording the purchase

The service seemed perfectly acceptable to me considering you were controlling the atmosphere and environment with a video shoot, and the mood/conversation with questions about items that don't come with the watch. I just don't know, based on the footage I saw, what else you were expecting. You bought their least expensive model and pushed for discounts. She seemed to answer every question earnestly and didn't seem the least bit rude. Perhaps it was facial expressions I couldn't see. Regardless, I over the watch, and you should be pleased.
