I just dropped that much on NFL season tickets on a team that I know is headed for a 4-12 record so it really isn't much to incrementally spend on something that is guaranteed to bring me great joy for the years it will take me to buy one at face value and my team to be competitve again.

Let me put it another way and see what you guys think.....

If you were allocated a 116500 from your AD and market price was 18400 at the time, would you flip it immediately and pocket the 6k pre tax?

If no, aren't you throwing away 6k in the same way that the buyer would be? You essentially trade places by NOT flipping! Whoever is holding the daytona gets the utility of ownership but pays the 6k of market price depreciation one way or another. Difference being the one allocated the watch has a chance to make money.

In my opinion theres something to be said about not exercising the option to flip.

Sort of cracks me up...we've all paid an amount of money for a product that many in the world would find obscene, but we won't pay "a penny" over MSRP for a super hot watch. We are a warped lot. ;-)

Allocated from AD: Keep the watch at a direct cost of $12k (plus $6k opportunity cost), or sell for $6k profit
Buy on gray market: Keep watch at cost of $18k, or sell for $0 profit

Buying at MSRP is uniformly better, regardless of what the buyer chooses to do with the watch

If someone gives me a new Ferrari for $1, and I never flip it for its market value of $300K, then I'm lighting the same amount of money on fire as someone who bought one for $300K?
