Not really, I prefer the smaller predecessor, and I wouldn't buy that either. So many to choose from all opinions are valid, as they say.

If there is a specific model that the OP would like information about, pros and cons, then the forum can be really quite helpful. |

I'd go with: DayDate, AP, or PP. All statement watches.

Rose Gold Daytona 116515, put it on black rubber b.
Everyone has the other watches you mention & 40 is special. Buy a Submariner for stopping smoking or losing 10 pounds or something like that. 40 = precious metals & on strap is best buy. ROSE GOLD YM is close but daytona is less $ and better with more complications, rarer & will maintain its value better. |

Plus RG YM doesn't fit the case properly I cannot believe that Rolex blew it when they made their oyster flex band not slide perfectly into the case.

Just Google "Rolex 5513" and it'll get you started, many reputable dealers are found on Page 1 of the search result.

Daytona C would be a natural choice as it was just released. I would think that would be a smart choice to match the occasion.

Lol going through the same thing right now, have about 6 months to go until the big 4-0. I've narrowed down the long list to the BLNR & White Daytona C(on multiple lists).

I recently turned 40 and treated myself to a white SS Daytona. I absolutely love it and look forward to being able to wear it, on infrequent occasions but my daily wearer is my GMT II and I still love that one, they're both so different, and equally loved and admired by myself when either is worn :)
Now I have to wait till I turn 50 for my next lol |

If its your first luxury watch i think get a Daytona or a Submariner black dial. If it wasn't however you can excuse yourself and buy a Patek Phillipe nautilus or a JLC Reverso. |

I have a 40th coming up in December and will purchase either a black dial Daytona C or a Patek Aquanaut to celebrate the occasion!

Or the SD4K or GMT BLNR, both 40 (mm), I have both and they are great pieces. I am in my mid 40s and bought these this year.
SD4K taken just now whilst taxiing on the runway in Helsinki. Great watch! Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk |

What about a vintage 40 year old Sub or GMT? I turn 50 later this year and found a birth year gilt Sub after many years of searching.

If you plan on buying more watches down the line, I would go with the GMT for now. It never seems to go out of style and is a great, practical addition to any collection. The new Daytona is great, but I'm not sure that I would want to deal with waiting lists for my first Rolex purchase. I'd say go try them all on and if you're not happy with any other model configuration, put yourself on the list for the ceramic Daytona.

What watch to get for my 40th bday...
FYI 1974-76 Rolex sports watches seem very hard to find. I think it has something to do with the Opec crisis and other financial factors that may have affected production of cases at the time. It seems much easier to find Tudor subs from this period. I ended up with an early 77' pre Comex 5513 which I'm happy calling a birthyear.
