Neither is the best option for dress watch but DJ II would edge the Daytona in terms of being dressier

Another vote for DJ2. Although not a dress watch per se, it's dressier than the 500c, especially with a flutted bezel.

DJII for sure. I really do not think a large steel watch with three stems sticking out of one side, three sub dials and a bezel with numbers around it looks very dressy. The Daytona is fine for a sports watch or an every day watch, but not for dress.

I had a similar dilemma when the Daytona C was introduced at Basel and decided to wait it out- hopefully not years- for the Daytona. I was all set to purchase a DJ 36mm- white dial, oyster bracelet, fluted bezel as an everyday watch, but also wanted something that could dress up on occasion. The DJ is a very versatile watch in that regard IMO. However, on the day they announced the new Daytona C at Basel, I immediately called several ADs to get on the list, and I haven't looked back.
Although objectively more sporty than a DJ 36, or DJ II, for me, everyday "dressy" at work means business casual with the occasional sport coat or suit, and for that, the Daytona is great I believe. As others have said, if we are talking dressy to mean formal attire situations then neither watch really fits the bill. |

OP- based on your comments, the reality is you will be buying BOTH. Simplify your decision by deciding on which one you want FIRST.

yep definitely the DJ is the "dressier", but I think would be hard to pass up a Daytona-C to buy a DJ.
If you have the budget for a Daytona, maybe can get a AP Royal Oak? |

Don't know if they do this dial on 41mm size for DJ2, but like it a lot

Hard to pass on a good priced DaytonaC at this point in the game, DJII or not. Get the Daytona C at list while you can and then decide if you want to keep it or not.

Neither is a dress watch.
But the DJ is less sporty. Yet still pretty sporty. Both great. Even with ur friend at the AD, I think ur more likely to get the DJ sooner. Besides, is 1/3 less in cost. If that's an option, and for ur desires, that's the one. For sure.

... I'm wondering why there's so little love for the new Cellini when we talk dress watches...?

Spend your money how you want to chief. You earned it. But as an outsider's opinion, I wouldn't buy a new watch specifically for dress. Sub is a great all-purpose watch. Just ask Sean Connery or the many members here who have fantastic pics of their subs under French cuffs or with suit jackets or blazers. Buy a Daytona because it's a fantastic watch with tons of history and wear both your relatively new sub and your new Daytona for dress and with jeans. They will go equally well. Leave the dj alone in my opinion. I get that it's the "quintessential Rolex" blah blah. But to me it is unattractive and looks "stuffy." Stay sport.

Neither is a dress watch. I would pick Daytona, especially with the datejust 41 coming next year in steel (probably).
I would go explorer 1 214270 (new version) and put it on a black Croc strap. |

I prefer the DJ II. Not factoring in the cost and your ability to find and purchase the Daytona-C the DJ II is a great reference. Go try the old style Daytona on and see if that might work.

They are, I think, better looking than any Datejust and vastly superior as a dress watch. and yet they are perfectly suited to normal life. You wouldn't swim in them, but most people don't anyway. My favourite is the GMT version, which is seriously good looking . Well worth an open-minded look. I may be buying one instead of my Day-Date. Everose gold, white face, brown strap. A genuinely classy watch, which offers real value. The idea you can only wear it with a suit (or tuxedo) is the purest nonsense. It looks great when wearing shorts and an open necked shirt. |
