About a week ago I was talking with a guy about a car and he had a 16710 Pepsi on. As the conversation was winding down I said nice watch and showed him mine and he just said thanks. It wasn't awkward at all. He was pleased I noticed. I usually don't say anything.

I never do. As I wouldn't compliment a total stranger on their attire, vehicle etc. Many times one might be tempted to do so but might be considered invasive by most people. I prefer limiting compliments to comments well said, views shared and gestures appreciated.

I'm 6 for 7 in receiving positive responses when complimenting stranger's Rolexes. I even had one guy take off his vintage Explorer and hand it to me to check out. However I'm very selective with who I compliment, only 7 people in over five years.

I comment on other peoples watches in my store all the time. But the person has to be a friendly, outgoing person that you can tell will accept a compliment about it. Plus it depends on which watch I'm wearing. If I am wearing my Sub, I will happily compliment other Rolexes. If I'm wearing my Colt, I compliment other breitlings. I guess it's a subconscious thing and it shows the person I'm not out to get them, I have one just like you!

I've only commented on someone's watch one time and I received a positive reaction and story of how he bought it almost 30 years ago. After getting into watches I do notice a lot more Rolexes in the wild and I have to fight the temptation to say something. I've had people comment on my watch twice

It's pretty rare that I comment on someone's watch as a total ice breaker, and honestly I never really thought about it but your results may be the reason why.

I'd say my odds of having a decent conversation or at the least thinking "this is a decent person", are much better than your 1 of 6. I'd guess because I only really put myself out there if I get a good vibe from someone.
Totally agree

Very seldom do I do this. My service writer for my BMW's is really into watches and he notices mine every time I deal with him. He has several Rolex watches. Maybe one other person but that's about it.

No.

I leave strangers alone and I would probably give you the same reaction if you commented on my watches

I've only ever commented to one guy on his watch, an Omega, but I measured the situation. He was about my age and his response was awesome - he immediately took it off and handed it to me to admire (we were sitting in a spa) - VERY cool. I've never had anyone comment on any of my watches, although if they did, I would love it. Mostly it's in their eyes - I see them look at my wrist and it's pretty obvious what caught their attention. That's enough for me

Now I don't think I'll ever make a compliment on someone's timepiece ever again.
Nope never care to comment about the next persons watch

Only happened to me one time, at work, when someone noticed my Coke GMT. He was wearing a Pepsi, I complimented him on his watch in return, and we started up a conversation. Interestingly enough, he was not only a member of this forum, but had purchased a few watches from DavidSW.

Very nice conversation, with someone who is not only familiar with the Rolex brand, but as well this forum.

I don't think that is comfortable for a lot of people in this day and age.
I think this is the main issue. I'd only talk to someone in a safe environment, like an ADs or airport.

I do it all the time.

I have only had 1 or 2 less than favorable experiences. About 99% of the time it goes super and I end up having a great conversation.

I find that the vast majority of the people I chat with end up being really please with a nice compliment.

some people don't like when others comment on their watch specially if its high end. They are snobbish
Although I am friendly and would like comment on watches, not everyone likes it I have realised.

I compliment people on their watches.

Sometimes they are wearing a luxury watch and sometimes they are wearing a $10 Walmart special.

Most of the time people are gracious about it.

Some are even a bit surprised that I'd compliment a cheap watch, but I always tell them not to be ashamed of an inexpensive watch. It's the style that counts.

I was getting a print out of my bowling team's stats the other night. We had all bowled a closed game the last game fo the series, which is a pretty rare event.

The kid behind the counter was wearing an obvious Sub homage and I asked about it.

It turned out to be an Invicta and he told me it was his first watch and that he was really like wearing a watch which he hadn't expected.

It turns out he's a budding WIS, so I invited him to check out TRF and learn about all kinds of watches, especially Rolex watches.

When I got my print out and said goodnight, he was beaming ear to ear.

I don't like strangers drawing attention to my watches. I always tell strangers they are fakes. You never know what their intentions are.

That's always the best!! See this is why I compliment people's watches. For the occasions when you can make some WIS' day like that. Well done!

Off topic, but do you bowl with your watch on. I have been bowling for 25 years (I'm 31) and I still hate bowling with my watch on. Doesn't matter what hand it's on either. It just feels strange to me.

Whether or not commenting on another's watch is proper etiquette isn't my concern. The lack of common decency amongst some of the mouth breathers we share this earth with is alarming. If another human is being friendly, be friendly back or move to another country. I have no use for half the people in this world.

I compliment people a lot. I've learned that a simple "nice watch" opens the most doors. The worst response has been a bewildered look. No one has ever been offensive, or deliberately insulting.

I've had a couple nice conversations in the airport about watches with total strangers. First RM I'd seen in the wild ended in a two hour conversation over coffee.

I also compliment guys on a nice car, a nice boat, or a nice bike. I think there is room in our society for a little chivalry. I always enjoy a compliment, they are becoming rarer, and it's nice that someone notices. I always thank the compliment giver, even if I don't have time to stop for a chat.

If you've become so paranoid that you are fearful that a stranger has recognized your expensive toy and has singled you out for some horrible demise, you need to lock it in your vault and strap on the Timex.
