216570 black dial. Killer, understated looks, all the functionality most would ever need. The perfect sport watch IMO.
The BLNR is certainly awesome too. I think you gotta just try them both on, and see which sings the loudest. Then walk away and sleep on it. Then see which one haunts your dreams. That's the one. Can't go wrong with either. |

Two totally different watches. The only thing they have in common is the GMT function. I've had them both, love them both...but ultimately the BLNR won out because the ExpII was just too big for my wrist.

The Explorer II hasn't been "cool" since the 1655. It's just never been a big seller, and people around these parts definitely love the BLNR. The GMT (any color) is my vote.

Also want to add, to reinforce what Clive said, don't rule out the GMT LN version. That would also be a perfect only Rolex.

I wish the current Exp II was 40mm. The current black dial version is absolutely beautiful and stealthy, but just too big IMO. So...I vote BLNR, or consider a SD4K which I feel is the best modern Rolex.

I'm in the Explorer II lot... The BLNR, along with the other similar models are chunky IMO... Though the ExII is 2mm larger, it is also flatter and sits better on my wrist. Plus the ExII is definitely it's own watch. The BLNR looks similar to other references.

I'd choose the BLNR over any SS Rolex watch.

I really like the BLNR between these two.
More modern, dressier yet sportier and the ceramic bezel is both more durable and beautiful IMO. I owned a white EXP II and liked it, just didn't love it enough. It got flipped for a Black SubC which stuck a lot longer. Have not owned a BLRN yet, but its been in my considerations the past year. |

I'd suggest only using the opinions on here as a guide to pick up some tips, not as a recommendation for which to get. Choosing a watch is too personal of a choice - especially for your first.
I'd suggest going to your AD and trying both on. They wear quite different on the wrist. One will feel like the "right" one and tj you will have your choice!

I had a very similar dilemma at the beginning of the year, but with the Polar Exp II. In the end I went for the BLNR as I'd coveted it for a long time and I unexpectedly came across one in an AD's window, they were slightly harder to find then in the UK.
One other factor to consider though is price, when I was looking the Exp II could be had on the Grey Market for almost half of what the BLNR was going for retail. That being the case, you could start a collection with an Exp II and perhaps an ETA Black Bay or something? If you're a one watch man though, I'd go for the BLNR, it's a great all-rounder. You can't lose either way, they're both special pieces. Good luck with your decision! |

My immediate response was BLNR. However, without knowing about your lifestyle and dress style, it's a difficult call.
If the watch is going to be a one and only, then it needs a bit more consideration. If you're in a collar and tie for work, then BLNR. If you're in more casual wear, then the EXP II will work for you. The EXP won't dress up as well as the BLNR, but then if you're the sort of guy that dresses up once in blue moon then you could go EXP II and leave the watch home when the blue moon rises. One thing I find annoying with the BLNR (and my Daytona) is how easily the PCLs scratch. A lot of members couldn't care less but it bugs me. Good luck

I had a polar 42mm for a few years and flipped for a BLNR recently. Couldn't be more happier. The explorer was just a little too big for my 6.75" wrist. And during the flip, I came to realize the explorer did not retain value very well.
My explorer went with me to many places in the world and was at my wedding. It can be dress up and down. The white dial goes very well with black suits. I would recommend BLNR if your wrists are not big. |

I think many here prefer the Gmt because it represents the quintessential Rolex look, but in a vacuum the Exp II is a cleaner, purer design. The new Gmt is too boxy and the new bezel is too prominent. My only other concern would be 40 vs 42.

I own the polar Exp2(42mm) for the second time and I would choose the BLNR. I love my Exp2 and it is within a collection of Subs. I love the watch, but i find it slightly too large at times and I find that thee BLNR is the perfect all around watch.

Wow , are you overwhelmed by now... Lol
I also vote BLNR as I have it and love it !!! I looked at the Sub C Date LN, Sub C ND, GMT LN GMT BLNR and YM Blue dial .... The one I picked ? Obviously BLNR as I mentioned I own it !!! Clearly the reasons why it won and best out the others . Look , style , functionality , intrigue and timeless design... |

WOW!!
Thanks for all the amazing input and replies! BLNR def gets the forum favor I see I would quote you guys to answer but I feel like I'd have to hit everyone for all the helpful insight they have provided. 1. This will be my only watch for quite some time and first Rolex at that. 2. I usually dress up for work ( No Suit ) but Button down , creased slacks and dress shoes.. time to time I wear a tie . Live at the beach so plenty of beach casual wear for the weekends but nighttime dinners and such I still dress nicer than beach casual. I do have smaller wrist so that may play a hand and leaning towards the BLNR that and one of my closest buddies has a Explorer 2 and a Daytona. Would be nice to wear something different also may come off pretty cheesy for two guys to be wearing the same watch. I do personally love the look of the Explorer 2 but I must say I am being swayed towards the Batman. Not to throw any curve balls as its mostly between the 2.. but I do love the Milgauss as well, however if I am only able to purchase one It would not be a top contender. The Daytona is my favorite especially love the new C.. but my wife and I have a formula that we stick to and that is to only purchase what we can pay for in full with the exception of a home. Thanks again for all of your help.. I plan to stop by my local AD this weekend try both on and go from there. I will probably be looking at the trusted sellers on this site as well who have a BLNR in excellent condition for sale. Best, John |

Rather different watches. I would have expected the choices would be like this:
- GMT BLNR vs LN or - GMT LN vs Exp II The LN occupies a region between your original selections, it is not as eye catching as the BLNR nor is it as understated as the Exp II. The Exp II is one of the last remaining "tool watches" in the modern lineup. In your case I would vote BLNR. You can always change your mind and unload it here with ease, then pick up the Exp II later. (I think LN is a better choice than either of those two for your first...) |

i dont think that is a fair fight. ask yourself this one BLNR or daytona or 116610lv. that's more on par.
