I was a little surprised to see him tbh; I would think the bad publicity which got him dropped from all the big names in the first place would deter Rolex from the approach. Wonder what the strategy behind that was..

I bought this Tiger Tudor around the time he was getting his Escalade beaten with 9 iron. He lost 150 million in advertising that year and the cost of my sweet 79280P was uh minimal.

All B&P perfect watch wish I had stocked up. :)

Absolutely not a fan of his off course shenanigans but one cannot argue with his on course accomplishments.

Actually, his biggest sponsor, Nike, stuck by him through that ordeal. Perhaps because they had so much invested, who knows, but for whatever reason they didn't dump him.

What Tiger does on his own time is none of my business.

At the end of the day, he makes decisions as a grown man, that he has to live with, good or bad.

Glad to see him with the brand!

TAG also put out a special edition Tiger Link watch, with his name on it. I guess that makes him sloppy thirds for Rolex.

I saw the post on IG and read through a bunch of the comments both there and here.

Why is it a big deal that Tiger has a sponsorship with Rolex, isn't Rolex purely just a symbol of success?

Tag appeals to a different demographic, and maybe that demographic would feel less comfortable associating with someone like Tiger in light of his marital issues, but I doubt the average Rolex consumer would feel uncomfortable wearing a product that Tiger wears.

That reminds me of the old Charles Barkley ads "I am not a role model." Sure, what you do on your own time is yours, but that doesn't mean it doesn't play a roll in your business life if you are in the public spotlight. I am sure there are morality clauses and such, that brands use to protect themselves. Sometimes you cannot ignore the "private" life of these people.

I never thought Woods was a good role model or Rolex sponsor. He has rarely been good to his fans and he is arrogant to a fault. He was a great player at one time, but, at best erratic now. A sports figure must have something more than just talent to be a good sponsor; he/she must have character.

Ooo I didn't know that... shows how closely I follow pop culture news! "In for a penny" was probably Nike's position.

Everyone has their flaws, Phil Michelson has gambling and insider trading issues, Ricky Fowler and Jordan Spieth make drunken videos of them playing golf. Rolex wants the best players in a sport to represent them for obvious reasons, they will sell more watches. What happens off the course can be forgotten by winning on the course. They were smart signing Tiger, he's by far the biggest name in golf.

Yeah, that was the $50M question - will Nike pull out. Don't know if the reason was their massive investment or not, but they stayed with him. He was their linchpin into golf. Up to that point they were hardly even a major player in golf footwear and they planned to go into the equipment business. On top of that they planned an entire TW apparel line around him. I recall at the press conference announcing his deal he was adorned with more swooshes than a NASCAR driver has logos and a year or two later the swooshes were gone and he was sporting his own TW logo within the Nike brand. So the $50 million/five year deal they initially signed him for was probably chicken feed compared to the money they had earmarked around his name.

"Everyone has their flaws"

The man cheated on his really beautiful wife with a whole bunch porn stars.

That's one hell of a flaw

Hmmm. ”tool"? That's not the word I'd use to describe probably the 2nd best golfer of all time. He single-handedly transformed the game and quadrupled TV ratings, raising purses for a whole generation of golfers. Oh yeah, this "tool" started a foundation that has benefited the lives of millions of children too.
He's had indiscretians, but who hasn't? Look at who we just elected as president.
Rolex knows that Woods is one of the most recognizable spokesperson on the planet and probably feels the sex scandal is far behind him.

As far as Rolex signing him, good on them. It's an astute move that, in the long run, will only pay dividends for them.

And, if you're a fan of Golf, you know Tiger's made the game far more competitive, given the level of player today: guys that are fitness freaks and can bomb the ball a mile. Unfortunately his success wasn't without carnage in that he had to gut Ernie Els along the way. But that is the price of success, I guess.

Kind Regards,

Ben
Well said Ben.

For whatever reason, male celebrities survive scandals and companies are most forgiving of them because they benefit from the association with celebrity, especially a reformed celebrity. Just look at Arnold S. He had an affair which resulted in the birth of a child but he's now NBC's new host of "The Apprentice".

At the end of the day we all live in glass houses and no one can afford to throw stones.
