They will sell you a barrel they make right at the distillery. The allure of an actual rickhouse used barrel wears thin as you have years of musty smelling conjurers that evaporate into the room. I used to buy them sawn in half and they didn't smell as you'd expect.

I would expect them to smell like a mixture of old barn and dirty bar towel.

In the original program, the barrel was part of the deal. That has changed recently, but I said no barrel, no deal. They will sell it finished or unfinished. Unfinished will definitely have more odor. Since the booze is being split between 3 of us, there isn't a fire hazard. Liver hazard, yes! Again, yield does vary. The lady said it could be as low as 170 bottles. There is a novelty in keeping the barrel. What many of you are forgetting is the we're all single and don't have a woman to constantly complain about it.

Well, you already know you're getting bottle number 55. We've already had that discussion.
I appreciate the thoughts and comments, but they are off topic and aren't answering my original question. My brother and I like Jack. My high school buddy LOVES it. This is something we've wanted to do for a long time. I was hoping to talk with someone who has already been through this process to gain a little extra insight. If not, I'll figure it out on my own. |

Do they drain the barrel and cut it? Typically when bourbon comes out of the barrel the alcohol content is a bit higher than the proof shown on the bottle. They add water to reduce the alcohol content to what ever proof they sell. I lived near Lexington Ky for several years and toured several distilleries. I know JD isn't a Ky bourbon but U believe it is very similar. BTW, a lot of the bourbon distilleries will sell the used barrels for maybe $200 or so. They can't be reused for bourbon.

Eliot is correct on proof. It's in the 120-140 range and can vary by barrel. Price will vary state to state based on taxes. In SC, a bottle of JD single barrel (94 proof) is $49.99. Barrel proof retails for $79.99. (750ml).

An Emptie barrel will make 6 gallons. Just add water and rotate barrel every day for a month.

They had barrels of Jack at the Costco near my house for a bit. That is a commitment to Jack. Sounds fun though.

If you like it, why not!
Personally I'd rather buy 5-6 super rare aged Scotch whisky's for 10k. |
