I can't speak to the rarity factor as many have said, Rolex aren't rare.

If he's a bigger guy and likes watches that wear large, DBlue or YM2.

This one is easy to find in Vegas. There are plenty. The DaytonaC is the hardest to get at the moment IF you only want to pay retail. If you have deep pockets, it's readily available.

If your friend wants a super rare Rolex, the below(platinum emerald, no ice blue dial) is a good starting point. As far as the merit of owning a Rolex for the sake of rarity, I find that a bit silly IMO. Even Subs aren't as common as they're sometimes made to seem here in comments

The Daytona C is not particularly rare, there are lots readily available - just the supply v demand is a bit out of sync so you need to pay a premium to get one.

If he is to buy in NY then the D-Blue is the hardest to get here that is easy to find in the USA however the currency might make it the same as buying here with a 15% premium and then VAT. He can join a few waiting lists and might get one in 6 months. Size wise this and YM2 are best for bigger wrists and both not seen on many wrists.

Can I just say thank you to you all. I'm sitting with my mate now looking at all your comments and looking through the images you have posted.

We are in Phuket Thailand now - so 10pm here..

Watch - He is not worried about the cost and resale value as he will never sell.

Deepsea Blue might be easier to get in the States. London a waste of time??
Also thinking the Daytona,,,after all your posts,,

I think it will be a trip to NY for D blue or a Daytona C

The hardest Rolex model to get hold of??

The Daytona 500 isn't hard to get - several listed at thousands over MSRP. It's just hard to get at MSRP.

The rarer models are the pave'd dial options in the DD lineup with pave'd bracelets.

Except for the rare vintage pieces shown here, and the pave'd DDs I mentioned, all the modern ones have sat in Wynn's AD in Las Vegas each time I visited over past 5 years.*

* Daytona 500 wasn't seen there this Winter.

I'm sure he can find a D-Blue in NY so that would be a good plan, think the D500 will be too small for him following the Hublot, esp if he has to pay a few grand on top of retail for the privilege.

that doesn't make it not rare....

lots of ceramic daytonas available as well albeit at a premium

blue probably will be discontinued LONG before the daytona-c as well...which for the record is just a 116520 daytona with a ceramic bezel...

all kinds of 116520s available

come to think of it....rolex makes a million watches a year

want 'rare'...buy a different brand say...IWC or GS

Modern "hard" I guess s the D Blue, BLNR or Daytona C.

Modern "rare" are things like the Somazzatori SD, COMEX 16600 & 16610. SRR EXP II, SRR Sub-C, SAS EXP II, DSSD Royal Navy Clearance Diver

Super Rare are things like a PN Daytona, Milsub, Jean Claude Killy

Vintage rare would be 6265, 6263, 6262, 6241 Daytonas

I don't understand...So you're trying to say deep blue is rare?

Anyone can easily get one today for same or less than MSRP. That makes it not rare, correct?

If your friend is looking to acquire a "hard" watch to make a point, get a brand new Patek.

Then no one will be wearing the same piece...

neither the deep sea blue or daytona-c are 'rare' although much more rare than a submariner or date just

Grand seiko who makes 5000 watches PER YEAR are 'rare'....IWC who makes 30000 watches per year are much more 'rare' than Rolex

any company producing 1 million watches per year re not producing 'rare' goods'

some buyers of the daytona-c have received a discount

but truth be told most dssd-b's and daytona-c's sell for MSRP w/o discount

Sounds like its more important for your friend to "make a statement" with his watch than buy one that actually means something to him.

The Irony is that no matter how rare the Rolex is, 90% wont event notice its a Rolex, And those that do, 90% probably wont notice how rare it is. If hes looking to have people come up to him and comment on his watch- ain't gonna happen.

If someone actually does comment on the rarity, they will be a WIS that will want to talk about the watch i.e. the history of the reference, how he acquired , etc.; something your friend wont be able to do as it seems he really knows nothing about the Rolex brand.
