It would be no question for me - Platona all day. The Patek looks too dressy for my lifestyle.

Dr Tom said it best that the platona can e dressed up or down whereas the PP is more of a dress watch.

I love looking at the PP but not on me

Keep the Patek

You're keeping a better, more refined, more finished movement. But frankly I would hunt down a pre-owned pt Lange Datograph and take your selection to the top of the tree, chronograph-wise.

In the Daytona you're getting the same movement that you would get in the basic ss version - so all you're getting is overpriced platinum, not a better movement.

The Platona is a much better all-around watch. The Patek is definitely more of a dress watch.

Is the Patek movement really that much better?

So what if it's the same movement, though? Isn't it one of the best, most reliable movements? Or am I just completely off-base here?

Just trying to understand what I might be missing.

Being certified to -2/+2 seconds per day sounds pretty impressive. Does anyone else come close? (Other than Omega's Master Chronometer at 0/+6 s/day.)

Very good point. Patek Philippe make one or two chronos, too, or so I'm told.

It's like comparing a reliable Mercedes engine to a hand built Aston Martin engine. Regardless of actual performance and reliability, there's an artistry and beauty that's on another level with the haute horology brands.

You may regret getting rid of the Patek later. Its a helluva watch and the Platona is nice, but you can essentially have the experience with a WG, YG, or RG. Keep the 5205, it's a stunner.

Define "better".

I think a PP movement is about as good as it gets with mass-produced watches (apart from independents such as FP Journe, who is in a higher orbit still).

I see. So the comparison is based on the hand-made artistic factor vs. the reliability. This would make sense to me.

Though, that doesn't equate to "better" but instead "different."

It's for this reason why I don't compare Rolex and Patek (in the past).

By the way, you should check out some of AMG's hand built engines if you haven't yet. :) Masterpieces, in my book. Especially the one in the SLS AMG Black Series. And even more so the Pagani engines (which are built by one of only two AMG Master Techs who are certified to build the AMG engines that Mercedes-AMG supplies to Pagani).

Yeah, I think the difference between cars and watches is that, realistically, the performance between a $500 ETA 2824-based watch, a $8K Rolex and a $20K Patek isn't really all THAT different, so money is really spent on the details and heritage. Justifying the prices is a fool's errand.

Not to change the subject but...

I'm so paranoid when I wear my 7500 dollar Sub-C... I couldn't imagine how I'd be wearing a Platona or Patek. Not that I could ever afford either one!

Calling it simply a Ford engine is a bit misleading, but fine. You get my drift.

A lot of talk here about movement and which is better.....Wondering if the op cares about the movement? He didn't mention it. Sounds like he might be interested in a style change.

Absolutely right.

It's very hard (for me, at least) to justify the circa $35,000 difference between a steel Daytona (which is a very very fine watch) and a platinum Daytona. This is the central question! Is the platinum and the colour scheme really worth that?

Think how much fun you could have with $35,000.....

Sounds like the Op's style is more sports watch oriented. Rolex will be more robust and cheaper to maintain so unless you value a hand built movement, go Rolex. I personally don't want a fussy automatic movement regardless of prestige. I'll take reliable, accurate and robust any day with my automatics.

This is an excellent point.

Unless you care about the heft of Platinum, and the color hue of Platinum, you definitely won't see the value in the Platona.

For me, I love Platinum. I wish they'd make a GMT-Master II in Platinum, because I'd definitely jump on it.

Others love Yellow Gold. I don't. Different metals, different emotions evoked in different people.

Do we really need precious metal watches? Absolutely not. The Stainless Steel ones are more than sufficient -- and even sometimes better due to their durability. :)

Do we want them? Yes, absolutely. Emotion reigns supreme here. Otherwise we'd all be wearing Casio G-Shocks.

Yeah, we all have the cutoff point we're comfortable with. Is a Rolex price justified when you look at Tudor, is a Tudor justified when you look at Oris, is an Oris justified when you look at Hamilton, etc??? Suddenly, we're all wearing $10 Casios.

Sure, but we are comparing a steel Daytona with a platinum one. If I was a billionaire, I'd consider the platinum, but given my personality (cheap) I'd probably still get the steel out of a perverse sense of fun.

Aston Martin is a piece of crap - utter junk. It completely falls apart at 20k miles. BTW Aston is buying engines from Mercedes now.

Back to PP and Rolex movements. Their is no third party/authority that has done a comparison and confirmed one is superior to other. When I look at PP, it makes me soft and puts me to sleep.

Well a real "power couple" would be wearing watches from a haute horology brand with stratospheric pricing/servicing costs.

I have a confession (which undermines all my posts in this thread).

I have a platinum FP Journe watch. I justify this to myself on the basis that it looks like steel, and FPJ only offer watches in platinum or rose gold (unless you include the minute repeater which is steel and completely off-the-scale, price-wise).

At the end of the day, luxury watches are very subjective and only you can decide what sings most to you ...

If it was about accuracy, or reliability, I would buy quartz or an atomic g-shock. When we are talking about a platinum Daytona vs Patek, it all comes down to what emotionally gets you going.. After reading this thread, the thought of a huge chunk of platinum on your wrist excites you .. Do what you think will make you most happy.

At the end of the day, a Platinum Daytona or a Patek is a highly irrational purchase to 99.99999999% of the world. I'm not going to try and articulate the value of one over the other, because it's moot because these objects are emotional purchases.

My gut tells me you want the Daytona... You can't go wrong either way IMO.
