You really need to see them side to side. I personally like the 6 digit improvements. The beefier case fits better with my wrists and the bracelet is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the old ones.

I like both depending on the situation.

116610 LN just looks great and solid to me. I am okay with the larger scale.

Recently picked up a 16610 LV which does feel great on the wrist.

I like the diversity. Same with the BLNR and 16610 Coke.

Both/And is a good alternative to Either/Or

The new bracelet/clasp is not necessarily an improvement. It is bulkier and heavier.

This

vs. this

I feel like the 16610's bracelet and clasp feel cheaper and not as well made. The 116610 on the other hand feels substantial and solid. Modern is the way to go for me.

Seems like the big plus for folks in the 116610 camp is the bracelet upgrade whcih I have to agree with I love the new bracelet.

Have grown to really like the fat lugs and the luster of the ceramic. And it is just very solid.

We should just appreciate each model for what they are. IMO Rolex did a great job with the SUBC and fitting of the Sub's evolution. If Rolex kept it exactly the same, you would have just as many naysayers that would've said Rolex doesn't do anything innovative and sells the same watches year after year.

Both great and IMO there is a place for both the 16610 and 116610 for any Submariner fan. There really is no reason to be so critical of the new model, it's a beauty and can handle anything the 16610 could in the sea and on land. Plus what is perhaps the best bracelet ever made, by any manufacture...

Have both, 16610 works better as a watch, ceramic 116610 works better as jewelry.

By what measure? Certainly not finishing, and even Omega has a couple of good micro-adjustable clasps these days (and the DSSD has the better clasp in the Rolex line.)

The biggest difference I see with the newer generation of 6-digit owners is the interest in heavier bracelets/clasps and stressing so much importance on such a thing.

I have no interest in a bracelet being heavier for the shear point of being heavy, nor should you have such an aversion to heavier bracelets, just because they're heavier than the old bracelets. The old stamped clasps just look cheap unfortunately IMO and feel flimsy. They can't touch a current gen Glidelock from the Sub, SD, or DSSD.

Are there better finished out there? Perhaps, if you look to AP or Patek in PM. But the current generation line's finishing is pretty darn flawless if you ask me and I'm also a Lange owner.

IMO the Sub with Glidelock beats out the DSSD in terms of whole package. Much better value without the significant premium you pay to replace a DSSD clasp vs replacing a Sub or SD4k clasp.

No need to hate the 6 digit models so much

A Sub bracelet can't hold a candle to the finishing of a steel Royal Oak bracelet. Different leagues.

I don't hate all 6-digit watches. I like the OP and the (discontinued) 114270.

I agree I do think AP does a very nice job on the Royal Oak line of SS bracelets, but the Oyster bracelet is pretty dang nice too. Outside of 904L(I'm a big fan of its color tone), I'm only buying PM these days though. I've been debating picking up an OP for an under the radar Rolex piece lately. That 114270 sure is a great piece too

I agree with that, and I have both. I do like the Sub's one piece link screw and the ability to adjust size without removing links, but then that's not necessarily finishing. The steel RO bracelet is really amazing once you actually inspect it and ultimately wear it.

I've owned several 5 and 6 digits. I flipped all the 6 digits primarily because I can't stand the big case and the bracelet is heavy/felt like it needed constant adjustment. 5 digits are light enough to wear a bit loose, which I prefer. My favorite, and I felt best fitting (by far) 6 digit was the 116710LN. I really enjoyed that watch but something about the ceramic look bugged me. Maybe a bit too flashy for me.
The old subs may be a touch boring, but to each his own. It's all a matter of personal preference. I say buy what you like, it's your money.

Give this 6 digit guy a try. Easy, comfortable fit when worn loose

They are both great watches. I love the ceramic and the bracelet on the 116610. This is an interesting thread and not to hijack it, but I was going to ask would I be disappointed going from a 116610 to a 16610lv Only reason would be to swap bezels and have green and black. I just think I would be disappointed with the bracelet. I think I could live with the bezel. I also would not want to save up for a newer style glidelock. Finally yes it's OCD and pretty stupid but my 116610 runs unbelievably accurate as in 0.03 sec a week. I wonder if a couple seconds a way would bother me hehehe.

Man I really wish there was an easy way to get off the ceramic bezels.

Here are some observations as someone with experience with both the 5 and 6 digit models. I honestly LOVE THEM BOTH.
  • The glidelock is more customizable, but I can get a near perfect fit on a 5 Digit model
  • There have been times where the 6 Digit felt uncomfortable on my smaller wrists, while this has never happened with a 5 Digit
  • That said, a perfectly snug 6 Digit usually feels great on the wrist
  • The quality feel of the 6 Digit bezel is amazing, while the 5 Digit bezel feels cheaper
  • The look of the 5 Digit bezel is cooler than 6 Digit bezel
  • The 6 Digit is a little more more bling/jewelry, while the 5 Digit is a little more tool/vintage
  • Despite all of the differences, they don't look much different from more than a few feet away. All divers have a certain look, and these two watches will project a very similar image to most people you meet. It takes close inspection to really appreciate the differences.
  • The heavy duty bracelet on the 6 Digit feels cool, sort of like a gold watch
  • The clasp on the 5 Digit looks better than the long bulkier glidelock piece, which covers the entire underside of my wrist.
  • however, most people will NEVER notice the clasp on your watch
  • While the 5 Digit clasp is considered a cheap tuna can by some, it has stood the test of time and has proven to be plenty durable. The over-built glidelock doesn't offer much practical improvement aside from the awesome customization

It's a toss up as to which watch is better for you.

Uh, no. This forum used to be filled with lots of 5-digit lovers, but their posts have naturally fallen away a bit as new users populate the forums primarily talking about the new watches.

As I've mentioned in the past, 5-digit lovers are in forum purgatory, because the watches aren't old enough to talk about in the vintage forum, and this forum is primarily full of 6-digit talk. So, whenever a comparison thread pops up, I'm going to give my opinion, and I can think of several members who agree with me in these threads.

p.s. few would agree with you if you think a Rolex bracelet is better finished than a Royal Oak's bracelet. That's crazy talk.

All personal preference. I prefer the 5 digit because that's what I've grown accustomed to over the years...

If someone puts on a 6-digit strap to a 5-digit sub that would be a perfect submariner then?

I suspect the average age of the people who prefer 16610 is at least 10 years older than the average age of the people who prefer 116610.
