I was on the same boat, made a flight trip just to see them side by side in a AP Boutique and my decision was the Blue 15400.
There several reasons taking this decision but i dont want to go into detail now, i still believe was the right decision and i love my blue 15400 amazing dial however i want to take this opportunity to brainstorm a bit. AP introduced in 2012 the 15202 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak, BUT it was not limited to a specific number of watches, it keep selling them (even in limited quantities) over the years. 15202s were also available to ADs whereas Blue 15400 were only been from start a boutique model. This means that most probaply there more 15202s out there than blue 15400s or close to the same quantities, btw you can also see this in Chrono24 etc. Now lets say 2022 comes, AP celebrates 50 years of Royal Oak, in the meantime AP kept selling 15202s, now to celebrate this they make the dial a bit darker or change something else a small detail, something small, but in the end they keep selling the same watch for over the years giving the choice to buyer to go with the slimmer or the sportier 15400. My point is that, the 15202 is there and will remain there over the years because will never be actual limited, the same goes for the AP 15400, you pay a premium to buy the blue from boutique. This is the reason why i believe a) the blue 15400s will keep their resale value strong unless AP changes policy (i doubt they will, actually selling from boutiques seems to be the new market policy from serious watchmakers like AP) and b) i am certain there plenty reliable resellers that will be willing to sell you an 15202 for a blue 15400 + Cash if you decide to go that route, since the 15400s in general are much easier to be sold.

Gotta go with what sings to you. I've never had them on the wrist so can't give you specific feedback but if the 400 is the one that sings .....

I got to side-by-side a 15202OR and 15400 blue. I liked the 15400 dial color better as well as the tapisserie pattern. It just looks more striking. However I like the dial layout and proportions on the 15202 better. Regarding the fit, even though I have a 6.75" wrist, the 15400 fit better due to the angle of the lugs. That surprised me. I went in thinking the 15202 would be the clear winner, and walked out torn and indecisive.
I hope to try on a 15450 blue when they are available, may be the right fit for me. I never flip, so I don't care about future resale, but I do want to buy at the right price. |

15202! seems to me that is the one you want. Understated elegance all the way.

You really cannot compare the dial under the harsh lighting at most boutique. Better is to see it under natural light outside.

If you get the 15400, do you think you will keep thinking about the 15202? Vice versa? The degree of how much you think about the other should influence the other.
It is very difficult to get the 15202 in ADs as AP is almost moving them directly to boutiques. It make sense as it is one of their flagship/original RO. Get the 15202 and live with it for a month. If you don't like it, flip it for the 15400 and you won't lose too much. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I'm already under the impression AP is doing boutique exclusive already haha. I spoke to two different ADs whom I have good relationship with and they both said that's where AP is going. The ADs were frustrated not being able to get these pieces because they sell! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I've also been purging my chunkier watches due to changing taste. I'm not enjoying larger watches for every day use. I recently picked up a 202 and couldn't be more satisfied. The proportions are fantastic and it's got just the right amount of wrist presence.
Good luck with the decision! Here's a pic of mine: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

this has been my rationale since i stared at both in the boutique. much like my current ROO...which i had been thinking about for almost 10yrs!...i finally got 6 months ago...and then now suddenly i'm trying to find it a new home so i can make room for the 15202. which is what i think would likely happen if i got the 15400...i'll always have a piece of my mind thinking about the 202. and i'm not certain it would be the case vice versa because my collection is starting to shift from chunkier to more discreet models. and from a financial perspective...if i'm proven wrong about myself that i'd much rather have the 15400, i know that i could likely sell the 202 and get almost all my $ back to fund the 400...not so much vice versa. |

It really all depends on the lighting. And your expectations. This pic is a pretty accurate representation of what the watch looks like on most wrists. And yes, it is very different to anything else in AP's current collection. Here are some pics in other lighting conditions: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

After feeling both on the wrist in 400 is just epic, but the 202 is timeless masterpiece. The 202 is special with its subtle details that take it to next level refinement.

How did you almost walk out with it if it was reserved for another buyer?

he described the process, the gist is that there's a waiting list for this model, but not specifically assigned watches to each person on that list. as he described how he goes down the list to contact each name, it was made clear that they don't give much time to those names to make the purchase once contacted. so much so, if they call and u don't pick, they have the discretion to just quickly move onto the next name. whilst that may sound rather incredulous, he also did explain that they get 3-4 jumbos per month. so I'd imagine there's plenty to go round, and the so-called wait is not so much a big wait at all. that's my take. |

Or is too difficult finding both to compare them.. Or you can only try it but this was sold and you have to wait couple of months to get yours (after 2 weeks you get a call that you were lucky and came earlier).. Or Before you leave they tell you: you know something, i liked you and this guy still didnt paid prepayment so if you want it you can have it.. Nothing wrong with it, is part of the exclusivity idea they sell to us but to be honest most of the times are just bs..
