The minimum wage here in California is $8.00 as of January 1, 2008. I usually double tax and round up if service was good or round down it service was bad.

In Indonesia there is no tips. It's OK if you want give the tips, but usually we don't give tips because already charge with service tax.

I tip...I wear a Rolex.

If my tips don't meet up with "your standards" which one of us is the Big Shot?

I have a young son so I do not frequent restaurants very much these days...

But when I do go out I do not feel like a "big shot" and I generally leave a 20% tip minimum

No, I never feel like a big shot. I wouldn't want to.

I usually have to help my euro friends with proper tipping. They aren't cheap by any means. They just don't think in those terms. I'm sure Americans grossly overtip in Europe.

I would never and have never felt like a big shot at any place I've been in because I'm wearing a Rolex.

Hopefully the treatment is the same with a Casio or a Rolex if I am going out to eat and that I'm not profiled to get better service. I would be bummed if I were wearing a Rolex and someone got better service because they are wearing a more expensive brand.

Nope. Not my type.

But we always got excellent service because of our easy outgoing attitude, for example calling the waiter/waitress by name. This show that you paid attention to the greeting and so on.

and 20% tip help too.

Where do you get your facts / figures? You have list of poor "tippers" in descending order of country demographics. Now I see you have 95% of restaurant's have "illegal people working there..".

The title of your thread was in essence: "Do you fee like a big shot in a restaurant wearing your expensive Rolex ?" How did it morph into "tipper-gate" and illegals?

Interesting note about it being considered rude to tip in Asia. At our sushi places, it's noted on the menu that the sushi chef appreciates a tip - and/or a drink from the bar, compliments of the patron!

I used to valet cars when in college at a restaurant and the best tippers were middle class folks. The guys wearing the expensive suits and driving really expensive cars, well they generally were the worst tippers.

I never felt like a big shot…I do tip, but if the service is bad I give less or very seldom nothing…the waiter now’s why!If I get a question, I would not say it is a fake either.

crappy crappy post.....

I always feel a big shot when I see a guy wearing a Rolex or whatever expensive watch he wear to show off and then on monday he has to go back to the office and bust his corporate ass...unless is retired. And,of course,I'm wearing my cheapest Timex.
Maybe he's loud too.......rude loser,no matter how much money he has....sitting there with is fat belly and 3 coronary bypass, poor guy I feel sorry for him.

I'm 35,I don't need to work for a living and I don't need to impress anyone, that's why my Rolex sits in the safe most of the time..I just don't care....
I do tip if I had a very good service, but I also tip is the service is a total disaster but it's not the waiter's fault.

I have never felt like a big shot wearing my Rolex. It may be where I live since most people around here have nice things and a Rolex is no big deal. I could care less what others think as well. I bought these time pieces for me to enjoy.

I read an article in Robb Report a few years back that some restaurants in NYC were seating guests according to the brand of watches they wore. So for those wearing Ultra high-end luxury watches such as Breguet or AP among others, they would be seated in better locations in the dining room.

To answer your question, no, I do not feel like a big shot. But I do tip generously.

No offense, but I feel this is a dumb topic. I'm sorry, but what difference does wearing a Rolex make with how much you tip? I have worked hard for the watches I wear and the cars I drive, just because I have nice things does not make me feel like a "big shot". It's all about the service for me. Why not alienate a few more nationalities why you are at it.

I think bodybump just wanted to stir things up a little for some cheap entertainment? I hope I'm wrong. Just questioning what purpose is served by the OP other than to generate animosity.

This thread has some usefulness. There are those who feel the watch makes them a big shot. They walk around figuring they deserve better service because they have some bauble of luxury.

When I was 25 years old I had a Rolex, a Leica M6 with 50/1.0, a laptop (this was 1988), and an American Express Platinum card. Know what? I was the same person. I had expected to somehow change inside to a guy who needs to wear a tie and drive a Mercedes. I hate ties.

And I have never tossed around any sort of status I may have for a few reasons. First, the other person may have something better. Second, they may not be impressed by what I think is status. Third, and most important of all, it shows a genuine disregard for the other person's position and demands that you be placed above all else.

Want service? Just say to the waiter "I know you are busy, overworked, and rely on tips to get by. You have a very physically demanding job and it is something that I could never do. Thank you."

Now with that, he hears, "I am a rich guy with a Rolex but you are doing something that I cannot do. You can surpass me if you keep that dedication in working hard."

And what's wrong with that?

Some of the bigshots out there really disparage the Rolex brand through their actions and attitudes.

Sorry Lisa, but I thought someone with 96 posts would have already pushed their trolling capabilities to the max, reagardless, the post was in very poor taste.

This is a ridiculous topic. The simple answer is that tipping customs are different in various geographical areas, within various ethnic groups, etc. I always tip 20% on meals, etc., but tips should never be expected, only earned and appreciated.
