How do you tell if a glit dial is original or fake? |

looks to me like a nice gilt gmt ´66 where a watchmaker (or nature) has chipped off some tips of the lume dots (sometimes done before during service where small dark stains).
Hands looks to me to be replaced/relumed at some point but not 100% sure. I would definitely ask for a pic of the lume in darkness showing the glow of hands/dial. Possibly dial glows here but not hands. Also would like a picture of what under the caseback. Sometimes pristine on surface could shown pitting/corroded around case/caseback. Just my humble 5c

Gotta say overall a great looking piece but I would want to negotiate the price of an insert out of whatever I think thought this watch is worth... Find an insert you like before getting into the deal... at this price point this watch deserves to be correct.

I went to the shop today and the shop showed me the serial and ref number on the case side, he also showed me the case back which had 65 ingraived(not laser printed)
All seemed good. He did not want me to take pictures. The gloss dial is one of the best I have ever seen, I have taken pictures so please have a look and a video on my google photos page link bellow. https://*******/photos/53B7DXbYbt8HH9tb6 he was open about the hands had been relumed(both dots and hand glow, but dots are more green, where as the hand are white-ish, insert are fat fonts but probably changed at some stage, I have verbaly agreed on mid 18K. Please let me know your thoughts on watch and price. |

Hello, it seems like you have a very good grasp on what kind of watch you are buying. We will have to take your word on the movement and caseback, but if he opened it up for you and everything looked good then that's a good sign. The bezel insert is not original but it is very nice. The hands have been relumed and possibly replaced. The gloss dial looks very nice but possibly relumed as well. The case looks to be in very good shape, not overly polished. You are getting two rivet bracelets, which are very expensive on their own. You, and everyone here, can continue to pick this watch apart forever, but you are the one buying it. Do you like it now that you have held it in your hands? Will you be happy wearing and owning it? If you are a watch enthusiast and not a serious vintage collector, which applies to most of us, then it doesn't need to be perfectly original, just perfect for you. I think it looks nice, way out of my price range, but I would be happy to own it. Good luck, and come back and post some wrist shots if you close the deal.

I believe I have a pretty good reference example if needed. It's tropical but still maintains perfect gloss and an unpolished case.
I uploaded a gif to show the gloss but as I'm not sure if everyone wants to load it with their internet; please click the link to Imgur where it is hosted. http://imgur.com/a/NxlBx |

A point of frustration for me.....I see tons of 1675's listed as "gilt" dials when they have no gold printing. Why are people calling white printed dials (or even silver printed dials for that matter) gilt dials???
The definition of "gilt" is the thin layering of gold leaf as in gilt printing etc. Is there something I am missing here?

Thanks to all your advice and education, I bought the watch today.
Although the hands, besel insert are not original to its age, the gloss dial was too nice to pass. Again thanks for all your help. |
