In NYC for a position interview

NYC will be totally different than SD. Different weather, scenery and vibe. Are you ok with that?

As others mentioned, the cost of living is very expensive if you plan to live in the city. You may need to adjust your living standards, but if this is a great advancement opportunity, I'd give it some serious thought.

I concur with Wes. We go to NYC at least once a month, mainly for theater, and we love it there. We have a 1BR at 75th & Lexington. We have everything we need within a 2 block radius of our apartment. If the situation is sufficiently lucrative, you can live very nicely there. OTOH, I have never been enamored of SD. It usually rains or is at least cloudy when I've been there and you have to get in your car to do anything. If we drive to NYC, I park my car and take the subway, bus, or Uber if it's too far to walk.

I could easily live in SD. One of the nicest places on Earth IMO.

Visiting NYC is fantastic. Doubtful I could actually live there though.

Careful about what watch you wear to the interview. According to many here you won't get an offer if you wear a Rolex.

If it provides enough dough to rent a place in Manhattan (~4-5k per month) then by all means. New York is awesome

You would need around 7,246.92$ in New York, NY to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 5,100.00$ in San Diego, CA (assuming you rent in both cities).

That is no issue, however, senior management in NY decided they liked me so much they want me there full time, and offered substantial incentive to make the move. It was a shock.... I really need to think about it.


Oh, and no one tell my current employer I posted this... I didn't even think!!!! What a dorklehead I am!!!! Thank goodness none of them are on TRF.

Lots of things to consider. Few important ones are single vs. Wife and Kids, cold winters and humid summers, Socal beaches/more suburban vs. big city, financial situation, etc.

I had a similar opportunity and thought about keeping my primary house in Socal and moving to NY for 5 years or so and then coming back. Wife wasn't having it. While we both love NY for short trips just couldn't justify the non monetary lifestyle enjoyment changes. Actually decided to go the other direction and quit my job and start a company.

No city in the world like nyc (although dc is a close second). If you can make it here and so forth. Get a place in greenwich ct. And so in other words i would do it. And congrats!

This is what I do! Not exactly cheap, but definitely more reasonable than Manhattan (we have a three bedroom and a car with parking, which would be impossible in NY).

Good luck with this decision, Paul. Could you rent your house in SD, take some time in Manhattan, and hope to fall back to SD if you don't like NYC? I realize you would be juggling jobs, but my advice is keep your options open if NYC ends up being not to your liking. That's a big change!

Nobody likes living in NYC...You either love it or hate it.

It's cost prohibitive for most Americans and many companies do not adjust for the cost of living appropriately. The average cost to rent a a 1bedroom apartment is $3k and the average to buy is over $1M. It's much more in the more desirable neighborhoods. Factoring in the other day-to-day expenses, you need over $200k to live a middle class life in NYC. Anything less and you're really living paycheck to paycheck.

My son turned 2 recently so we had to find a 2 bedroom. We sold our apt in the village and are renting for a year until we can figure out whether to stay or go.

As long as they are offering serious $$$, then hell yea go to NYC.

Single guy in the big city with endless restaurants and entertainment. San Diego is cool, but can get boring after a while.

Almost forgot -- We talked a lot about downsides, but we almost missed one of the biggest upsides: Networking. I think Manhattan is the best place in America for networking.

Compared to a place like San Diego where you might be driving to each meeting, you can take so many meetings (whether formal or informal) just in midtown. Coffee before work or at random points during the morning, power lunch, drinks after work, etc.

It's hard to discount the value of being near so many people with technical, financial, legal, and business expertise. On the techy side (are you still working in drone technology?), Google has major offices and "Silicon Alley" has matured a lot.

Considering your affable personality and love of people, NYC could be a goldmine for you, Paul!

I live in NJ and work in NYC near the Freedom Tower. My commute is 30 minutes flat. Hop on the light rail to Exchange Place and then one stop on the Path. Easy peasy. My wife works in midtown and simply takes the bus in. Again easy peasy. Find yourself a nice place in NJ and you will not only save money but you will have the best of both states. Jersey is one of the most diverse states to live in with lots of history and beautiful towns. Make sure you take a drive on the Palisades Parkway and visit Bear Mountain!

Congrats on the exciting opportunity!

I break things down into 4 groups:

1) Just after college with a good job? Manhattan is a blast. (This was me for 6 years.)

2) Investment banker or independently wealthy? Manhattan is a blast.

3) Born & raised in or around Manhattan? Tough to live anywhere else.

4) Otherwise, I'd advise against NYC....

And I'd definitely advise against NJ or Westchester....Don't see much point in giving up San Diego and a good job to commute to Manhattan....

NYC is expensive but also one of a kind experience. Money has to be right on. Lastly, if you don't try, you will never find out how good or bad it is. Good luck with your interview and decision :-)

Often there's more to these opportunities than meets the eye. I'm not sure if your age, but you seem like you're similar to me (50ish)....

At my stage, I'm focusing less on chasing the dollars and more on lifestyle. Having said that, there's plenty of positives to NYC I'm sure. You must be prepared for a different pace ( oh and weather)

You could always say you prefer the offer of one week in NY, the three at home, if its more suitable.
