They will not let you into makoto if you are wearing $1000 jeans.

No kidding!

I treat everyone well unless they give me reason otherwise, especially those who are serving me.

I order what I want. I dress how I like provided it's within the dress code of the establishment. If a jacket is required I'm probably not interested as I tend to prefer dining minus the pretense.

Also, I think a jacket with jeans looks silly but that's another argument.

Wear jeans all the time into 'fancy' restaurants haven't been asked to leave yet. I like to be comfortable on the weekends after a long week of work. Of course I am in Atlanta and not NYC so that might be why.

Jeans would be acceptable at a fine dining restaurant in NYC, but shorts probably would not

Off the top of my head, I think only Jean Georges, Per Se, and Daniel have a jacket requirement.
It's even more relaxed over here. typical dress code for a high-end restaurant in HK is "smart casual" -- this means no shorts, no sandals, and no tank tops. I've yet to find a restaurant in this city that won't allow jeans and a polo.

I don't even own a pair of jeans and don't leave the house without a collared shirt but routinely wear linen slacks and polos or casual button downs (yes downs not ups as they do have button down collars) and sperry top sliders to all types of establishments. Part of it may be that I am in, either, a retirement town (Cashiers NC) or in Asheville (Not much that's nice) or Atlanta (again the standards don't seem too high.) Growing up I wore about the same whenever we visited my grandmother in Palm Beach and one of the Penrod brothers (Nikki Beach club's, resorts, and hotels) is a great regular customer of mine. He wears old overalls and chews on a cigar all day, no one turns him out of anywhere.

To know the future is to be trapped by it

Yeah, if someone is dressed decently, I think they're very unlikely to be turned away from a restaurant. If you show up at Per Se for your 7 PM reservation on a Friday, are they going to send you away for wearing jeans? No, they're not. I have worn jeans there before, and no one cared.

This is the norm in SoCal but I can assure that you would be turned away at some fine restaurants on the east coast if you show up wearing short. I've had to wear a loaner jacket before, jeans might be okay but forget trying to dine there if you're wearing shorts.

the only good advice was to avoid ordering your favorite food.

I for one always try something new any time i go to a new restaurant as otherwise I would only know how one thing tastes at 50 different places. We are all creatures of habit so you do have to remind yourself to try new things because that may become your favorite, but you won't know if you don't try.

the US tends to be more casual. Europe and the UK in particular do enforce dress codes. Jacket and tie dress codes are not that uncommon, if you don't show up with that on, they won't seat you. No shorts or trainers (tennis shoes) is almost universally not allowed at any high end restaurant even those with more relaxed dress codes.

I did see a guy at the Ritz once being turned away for improper dress, but in general I think everyone knows the protocol so it isn't a big deal. He was on a date it appeared, I'm sure it was embarrassing.

At the World trade Center in NY you had to wear a jacket to gain access to the top floor restaurant.

They had a room downstairs next to the elevator full of jackets and would let you find one in your size to wear.

This was a free service and pretty neat I thought.

When I was a young guy, all of the quality restaurants in the big cities had fairly strict dress codes and jeans, polos, runners, shorts, T shirts, sandals were banned - at least for Dinner. Some required a jacket, a few a tie.
I am happy to dress up for Dinner at a good restaurant as it adds to a sense of "occasion" for me, but if you dine out every night then maybe not.
I don't see 'dress requirements' in a good restaurant as pretentious. Quality restaurants are aiming for a certain "ambiance" and dress standards help to achieve that.
These days only the top establishments are prepared to enforce their standards - everybody else is just happy to have the business.

I while back I travelled to Washington DC fairly regularly. I stayed at the University Club. The dress code was jacket and tie even for breakfast . At the time I worked for a technology company so I generally had breakfast sent up to my room

Yeah, that didn't sound like something you would do. However, I have seen some behaviors up in the Philly, jersey, NY area that are pretty rude but seem to be common there. I will say that every TRFer I've met have been stand up people....well, except that Paul guy.

Proper attire and finger-snapping aside, it seems ludicrous to spend $400.00+ for a meal (even if it's prix fixe) as all you're really paying for is snob appeal, bragging rights and some dinky platters of 'artistically' arranged ingredients.

Having experienced this BS at The French Laundry in Napa Valley, all I can say is save your money. Or learn to cook at home.

It may be expensive but you will never be able to prepare a meal even remotely close at home.

Napa food was really underwhelming for me, Adhoc is an absolute joke. Agree that some places are an absolute rip off.

I will say that I do love fine dinning, tasting menus and wine pairings. Some absolutely amazing places here on the east coast. Personal favorite is Komi, close runner up is the Inn at Little Washington. NYC is of course the place for fine dinning. I'm hungry!

Seriously. And then add anywhere from $175.00-$1500.00+ if you want a bottle of wine to go with it.
