Lets be honest, larger, shinny watches are the current trend, so here comes the GMT IIC. Rolex has always been bigger than falling into the current fashion trends with their sport watches until now.

It rises at 6:00hr and sets at 18:00hr every day on the equator. What I use the two coloured bezel for is I can see 15 minute segments very quickly when using the bezel to time things.

Of course, the tones on the bezel only represent a generality. It wouldn't apply to all locations, all the time.

Just as your example is one experience, here in Anchorage it's even more different. On the winter solstice, sunrise is almost 10:30 and sunset a little after 15:00. In the summer, just the opposite, when it never gets dark. The further north, it's even more extreme.

The black bezel is just "different". It doesn't provide the graphical representation of day/night, only the numbers. That's just fine, too; whatever your personal preference. It never hurts to verify by just looking out the window...

Have a few GMTs and no matter what color bezel insert, I use the watch to tell time. If I need a bezel insert to tell when it is dark outside; I will buy a piano and sing like Stevie Wonder.

a. typically less expensive (bought mine used);
b. a bit smaller (width and thickness);
c. may lack the huge trip lock crown appropriate for a diver's wrist, but who cares - it's not a diving watch;
d. comes with a less blingy bracelet;
e. bezel font, hour markers and hands are smaller (narrower) on the older dials and the bezel insert (versus the maxi dial)
f. don't know about the weight of the ceramic model
g. yes, I know that ceramic technology is superior to the all-time standard aluminum (?) bezel insert;
h. don't like the green GMT hand;
i. the ceramic has a lot more HYPE than the older GMT Masters, even though there may be some added pluses, such as the new hairspring, the ceramic bezel and the trip-lock crown; and
j. yes, there is a reason for the bi-colored bezel, which the new GMT IIc doesn't have.

I guess it's all a matter of what is important to you and what you like. That's all.

Thanks for an informative post.

When the GMT was first introduced it was designed by a pilot for pilots..

The black over red look is similar to the pilots artificial horizon instrument which was possibly the most important instrument in the cockpit in the 50's.. so it could be argued that the design is nothing more than aesthetics..

In actual use, originally, the GMT did not have the convenient "jump" Mercedes hand so it became convenient to be able to see and set the bezel in relationship to light or dark outside.

When you're flying at 35,000 feet, the horizon (and when the sun sets and rises) is dramatically different than it is when driving around in your car...

And let us not forget that the GMT was popular with submariners, military pilots and so on who might either spend days / weeks / months locked somewhere windowless OR wake up in a dark room after some well earned sleep and want to know.....

John, you need at least a Coke and maybe a rootbeer (not for me though) to complete that awesome collection!

Thanks, I'm saving the coke bezel for the 16760 which I am still looking for. Anybody have a 16760 for me?
