We just redid our kitchen and went with quartz as well. Love it!

If you're going with quartz I'd only pick Cambria. They have the highest % of quartz content in the business. Also made 100% in North America so no unknown material used in production.
If your looking for something different in stone try sandstone. It needs to be sealed so do a lot of other products. Other option as Mark mentioned earlier is recycled glass. I've seen some really cool colored glass tops with the addition of lighting under the counter. It rocks.

This is what my wife wanted. We needed 2 slabs that could be used together. The 2 that sold her (us) were reserved of course. After having 2 suppliers bring in 8 different slabs that were all consecutive numbered slabs (4 and 4) none matched close enough to use them while cutting around some pretty major inclusions. I ended the madness and we settled on the granite with a marble backsplash. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I agree they are. You can get various colors and custom designs make the possibilities virtually endless. The lighting can also work as a night light.

Yes but your house would look like a sports bar in Toronto

Check out Silostone. We just did an extensive remodel and used it throughout the house. They offer jumbo slabs, so no seams if the counter is large.

Maybe so. But these recycled glass tops can be pretty cool looking.

Throwing out steel countertops, as it has not been mentioned. (Think of a restaurant prep area.)
I have been told by it is more expensive than granite, quartz and concrete however. |

A TRF member recently posted food images with countertop in view. It looked like black walnut random width blocks. Beautiful!
One of the nicest kitchens I've seen had a single long, maybe 20' x 4' butcher block counter nearly the length of the room. Fridge, cabinets, oven parallel, behind galley aisle. Range and sink in counter. Opposite the counter, 4' thruway traffic area adjacent to northern exposure room length patio sliders onto deck. So you can cook at the stove, wash and prepare, looking out into a heavily wooded lot. One of the better-designed Valley Forge Mountain homes. It was a little odd at first; not the kind of kitchen to hang out in, out of the way, but it grows on you. |

Carrara Marble. Not as sensitive as many think.
