I love your story. That’s a big regret I have. I wished I had done the same thing when I first got in. Oh the memories you and that I watch must share! Congratulations

Great story, Bill. $109 was a lot of money in those days. That watch is now worth at least 30 X what you paid for it.

Well, this is as good a first post as any. I am Bill's son, so the next time I am in town (I now live on the other side of Florida) I will take a bunch of pictures of the "original Submariner" (for our family!) and get them posted up here. This seems like an awesome community, and I was blown away by the new Hulk he got for Christmas!!

As promised, this is the next time I was on the east coast of Florida. I photographed the Accidental Rolex, the Christmas Hulk, and the Beater GMT. Because this is only my 2nd post I'm not allowed to actually post the photos yet, but I'll get them up here shortly.

How did I miss this thread!? What a great story! Thank you for your service in the US Army. In the 60s no less.
I was a dependent at Weisbaden right about that same time. |

Awesome story! I have a similar story, although it's not about me or one of my own watches, but rather, a coworkers.
At work, I try to keep my watches "under the radar", but a coworker happened to notice my Tudor Black Bay, and next thing you know, we're talking watches for the next 20 minutes. He told me that one of our other coworkers - an engineer that has been with the company for the past 45 or so years - spent some time in the army prior to joining our company. After a deployment, he came back to base and wandered into the PX in search of a watch. With some money to burn in his pocket and no real idea what he was looking for, he walks out of the PX a few hundred dollars poorer but with a Rolex on his wrist. The watch was worn seldomly over the past 4 decades, coming out only for special occasions. This guy is not a WIS, so he didn't know much about his Rolex other than that it was a dive watch. After hearing his story, my coworker convinced him to do some research on the watch to see exactly what he had. Turns out, he's the proud owner of a Red Submariner... by accident, much like yourself. I just heard this story a few days ago, so I'm hoping to get more details and hopefully some pics from the owner himself. If I'm successful, I'll be sure to post an update. |
