Rhinitis comes to mind.
An ENT is a good first step.

My Diagnosis :
>>Olfactory Mucosal Dysfunction with moderate to severe Hyposmia ( varying severity of loss of smell sensation ) Secondary to Chronic Rhinosinusitus
>>The pathology is Conductive Olfactory sensory loss and possible degeneration of sensory neurons most likely multifactorial in Origin complicated by Nasal polyposis, possible Nasal septal deviation, asthma, turbinate hypertrophy, recurrent allergic or infective rhinitis +/- smoking, illegal substance abuse
>>Unlike popular belief, Age is NOT A RISK factor for Olfactory loss or loss of smell sensation
Please see a ENT Specialist. Condition maybe partially reversible with medical and surgical treatment

p/s : I am a female Interventional Cardiologist by the way...

OP - are you cold, is that why you cover yourself? I am reading you have two issues??? Cold and sense of smell?

Glad you are following Megan's advice for ENT, re your olfactory issues.

If you are cold, and have never had a thyroid panel done, why not discuss it with ENT?

In my case, I have a long history of feeling cold, it took years seeing various family docs and specialists to figure out what was wrong because they were only running TSH, T4 and T3 on me, and not the test profile I pasted below. There is a big difference.

This is the actual thyroid panel that diagnosed my thyroid (autoimmune) condition.
  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies

Good Luck. Stay with it, until you find out.
Blessings,
DM

No numbness, not heavy, no substance abuse, no smoking and no excessive drinking.

Will seek help of ENT.

I have dust and grass allergies too and they are extremely annoying, and can lead to negativity and anxiety. A few years ago while watching True Detective my dust build up/rhinitis got so bad I couldn't breathe through my nose at all and my mouth wouldn't do it automatically so I had to force my breaths and it was so horrible, you feel like you're going to die. Since then I've changed all my sheets to hypoallergenic, and its probably a good idea to change your mattress every year too rather than buy protectors as that is the main problem.

As for the grass/pollen allergy I suffered terribly as a child, crying whilst playing sports, but then I got diagnosed as asthmatic and after using the inhaler for a few months the allergy went and I haven't had it since. Maybe check if you're asthmatic too.

Overall I'm not sure you have a major issue, probably just extreme symptoms of your allergies but be proactive and keep a positive mind as this can make things worse otherwise.

Altho Megan seems to have a very good idea.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I don't have asthma, nor have I had in the past. I don't take any medication as well.

I am not depressed and am usually a happy positive (cynical) person :)

Also if you don’t exercise or walk to get your lymphatic system moving, go for a walk and get some sun. It will do your body wonders by helping it get rid of toxins. Helps the mind and every cell in your body.

While not experiencing exactly the symptoms you are having, I've been having slight problems with smell, and a nose that one day is constipated on the left side, the other day on the right etc etc... And going to the doctor (different ones) always end up at the same place. "You're only 36" and "You look healthy".

OK, fine... But if I don't feel completely healthy?

My symptoms from this last autumn have pretty much gone away, and I do think many of them was from stress.

But I can relate to you OP, as it's rather upsetting to go to a Doctor, and he/she answers your complaint with "you're only 36".

Do you have a lot of stress in your life?

Stress has come into game only in the past 2-3 years. Before that I was still having the cold issues and lower smell sensitivity.
I am trying to manage the stress levels in the past six months and been quite successful. Still I feel that taking the stress out of the equation won't fix this.

The Cranial Nerve 1: Olfactory Nerve.
Excellent slide presentation, it is long - might be helpful for you to read about how a diagnosis is achieved. History is important, clinical, social, trauma, etc. Then the medical testing.... etc.

If your doctor hasn't taken a interest in what might be wrong, then you should be finding one that will.
It is your body. Take care of it, advocate for yourself. The longer you wait, the more damage 'could' be occurring. Be persistent. Very persistent.

Also seek answers to why you are 'cold'.

Blessings,
DM

I'm not a doctor but from what you mentioned it looks like both of your issues (sneezing and smell) are related.

I'm couple of years older than you~35 and I used to get some of these symptoms and more (sneezing, sore throat) when I travelled to city (from NJ to NY) via public transport. I had a very strong immune system earlier but then every time I went to work, I felt sick in the evening. My doctor didn't take me seriously either, so I started analyzing my routine before I got those symptoms.I deduced it may be due to getting in contact with someone sick in the train and all those germs floating in NJ transit and subways. So now I carry my hand sanitizer every where and whenever I get a chance I use it specially after I get off from trains. When I come back home from work, I wipe my phone, bag etc with anti bacterial wipes and take a shower immediately while avoiding to touch anyone specially kids. I know its pretty OCD behavior but its helping my health.

Other than that, I also changed my diet. I take lot of ginger (as it helps your immunity), proteins and fruits.

I think your doctor should take you seriously or you need to see another doctor. Good luck

My guess is you can rule out that its not related to age. That being said
I would go see a few GP's and see and get different opinions & see if they can identify what the cause is, I personally had to see a few doctors before getting diagnosed with TMJ

Good Luck

I wonder how much of it is allergy related. Have you had an allergy test?

"Jasonindenver" and "Pickettt" - you crack me up!
OP - allergies are often very hard to pin down. My wife has had some sort of allergy reaction for about 35 years (Hmmm, we have been married for 35 years...) that has not been able to be identified by the medical profession. There is nothing we can link it to. I tend to think that it is psychosomatic. If there is any one thing I have learned in my life it is the close link between the psychological and the physiological.

Im gonna start off by scheduling on Monday an ENT doctor appointment. I don't know why but I am suspecting Polyp or some other congestion above my nose. when I pull away with my fingers the skin below my eyes I can feel like I breath a little bit better.
Polyps do all the symptoms I have (but the cold): clog breathing, lower smell sensitivity and create allergy symptoms such as sneezing and running nose.
I'll update you guys how it goes! Thanks for all the help!
