One of the first self-development books I ever read! A client actually gave it to me; great read.

Some people are comfortable enough to not give a F what people think of their watch. Good on them. Even cooler when they're mega rich and proudly rock a bargain bin watch.

A lot of people look at your wrist and think they know what you got in the bank. The same goes for the car you drive. What’s crazy is that in 2018 certain people would rather have a solid gold Rolex on their wrist and nothing in the bank. Too much materialism and not enough wisdom. It’s time for change.

The richest man in Hong Kong wears the cheapest Seiko, until 2016, when he decides to reward himself by upgrading to a $500 citizen.

Jimbo Fisher wears a President. Like a Boss.
- Drives a truck. Saban wears a Fossil. - Drives an AMG GT. Like a Boss. Different strokes for different folks. But I love seeing that President on the sidelines. |

People have different priorities. My dad was given a yellow gold Day-Date and it collected dust, he only ever wore his Timex Indiglo because he could see it clearly in the dark. However he had no hesitation about spending 50K on a private duck club membership.

I know a number of people who simply will not wear expensive watches to work, either as a calculated move or because of what they do on the job. Foolish to some, smart to others.

In the grand scheme of things, there's nothing "wrong" with wearing any watch, even an Invicta. It could just be my own bias, but I don't see Fossil as a watch enthusiast's brand. I'm not saying that with respect to cost; there are a number of inexpensive brands that attract knowledgeable fans. There are G-Shock connoisseurs for instance. I have two and think they're fantastic for the purposes for which they're intended. (Side note: I cannot think of a single purpose for which I would actually need a watch that couldn't be done better by a G-Shock than any Rolex.) I've just never thought of Fossil as an intrinsically interesting or functionally excellent brand. It's just sort of "meh," in my opinion. But maybe I'm wrong.

“Each to his own...”
Most of us here have a story how we got into Rolex - National Geographic Magazines, older relative, celebrity et al. They were just never bit by the Rolex bug. |

Defensive Coordinator of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles wears a Submariner. Not sure what I’m trying to prove by posting this, but...

Over 25 years ago, I owned a fossil watch that much resembles today's "Hulk", with the same shade of green divers bezel and sunburst green dial. It was one of my favorite watches. I literally wore it until the metal turned yellow and the it stopped working. Go figure.

For all I know these men might be sponsored by Fossil, if such a thing is legal. Nonetheless, I don't think that the two pictures in the OP tell the full stories of these men's lives or their tastes.

Really wealthy people don’t need status symbols to show their wealth. Everyone knows they got it... that combined with maybe they just aren’t watch guys

People want to project themselves differently.
Some Rolex owners where their watches under their sleeve. Other's absolutely positively must make sure everyone around them knows they're wearing a Rolex - because... Just do you. |

Why is Warren Buffet still driving that old Volvo?
BTW, I prefer my Fossil briefcase over my Mont Blanc on most days. |

Why not Rolex? Doesn’t make sense
I really, really don’t understand why the OP is so baffled by this— I almost thought the post was satire. It’s not even worth saying anything further.

I know a number of attorneys (particularly civil litigators) who have "court cars" that are fairly average. They may have Ferraris at home in the garage, but they drive Toyotas and Hondas (or Kias) to court. They don't want people - particularly prospective jurors who might actually be parking in the same facility as the attorneys - developing a bias against them or their clients.

My first job when I was growing up was pumping gas at a full service gas station. There was an old man that came in often in a beat up pickup truck. He always wore jeans and are you ready for this ... he used a rope as a belt. I later learned he was a multimillionaire who got rich selling a bunch of land that was rich in Kaolin. That's just how he was.
Having said that, I do see the point that OP is making. There is a big difference in a football coach that's on national tv each weekend and an old guy at the gas station using a rope to hold up his jeans.

Expensive watches are considered a liability during business transactions . Being low key and modest will win more business deals. As a physician I cringe when patients or colleagues stare at my watch or car.
I leave my toys home wearing a beater watch and drive an older car on work days and enjoy my hobbies during the weekend |
