I would only purchase with papers. I am not too worried whether it has a box.

to few people who don't care it will make little difference in value. For most who care the difference is deal or no deal, not the $

Very important! When you want to sell it you will take a big hit without papers!

Disagree with this as I believe it depends on the individual. As they say, they strokes for different folks. I know a collector who lately has a hundred + watches from various high end brands and he keeps the box and papers for all of them. I know another guy who has 3 Rolexes and tossed the boxes as soon as he bought them. Within those margins I bet there is every combination of outcomes. I collect watches and wear them all and I keep the box and papers b/c I like having them.

Having the card with your name on it and a original purchase receipt will go much father, as in all the way, in proving you are the original owner more than a bunch of stickers. Furthermore for the last year AD's have been taking stickers off watches before you leave the store. Then what do you say to Mr buyer?

To the OP, I prefer to buy a watch with box and papers as I like having the full set. whether or not there is a lot of value in having them, I am not sure. I think there is a percentage that will only buy with a full set and others who don't care as much. what those #'s are I do not know. I think when you get into vintage it becomes much more important in determining province of the watch.

I have all but warranty card is king. People do things in a certain way when they purchase a watch and do what they do with and everything with the little extras.
But that's what I do to my stickers. What other owners do is their prerogative .
Besides my AD knows I am not a flipper.

I like full sets but What happens if the plastic tag is missing when a dealer withholds it? (not the chronometer tag the plastic tag with the model reference and serial) Would it bother you?

It's important to me because I like things complete.
If buying preowned, this is a tell tale sign of how the previous owner treats his watch.

If you're selling a Rolex, having all the papers and the box opens the sale to a broader market. It's as simple as that. You can charge a bit more, I think.

My first Rolex came as a gift from my Mom in 1986 who rarely kept boxes, or papers for that matter. It wasn't a priority for her. Even back then I liked all of that. I was lucky she kept the warrantee, which she brought me later along with a box and a catalog. No instructions, though. The box seems like it's for a lady's Rolex, but beggars can't be choosy.

For the record I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping all the stickers. I haven't done it in a while but I confess that I did do it once or twice only to toss them later I like taking them off when I first get a watch. Its like unwrapping a present. Sometimes I find one a missed 6 months later.

I agree warranty card is king and I also totally agree that its anyones prerogative what they do with their stuff , be it stickers or anything else. The only point I was making is having the stickers doesn't prove you are the original owner of the watch. You said you needed then if you trade in to prove you are original owner and I disagreed with that statement. You could have bought it off of here or a hundred other gray market places with stickers on it and if you did so, you are not the original owner of the watch. Stickers prove nothing other than when you got the watch, it had stickers on it.

The only thing that will prove you are the original owner the watch is a store receipt and a warranty card with your name on it.

AD's worldwide, as has been reported here in many threads, have been removing stickers before watches leave the store. So saying keeping the stickers proves you are the original owner is not correct. Warranty card and receipt proves you are the original owner.

I think most of the reasons for WITH OR WITHOUT have been covered.
OP, what’s making you ask these questions? Is there a piece you’re considering?

Keeping the stickers as provenance is ludicrous. Sticking them into/onto the Rolex manuals even more so, because you are damaging the reading material and the booklets the came with the watch.

I’m just a curious novice. From the responses here, I’m thinking that a paper trail does help with selling as it may improve trust, but of course this is not always the case as frauds will go to great lengths to forge documents. The take-home lesson for me is to keep all paperwork, etc. when purchasing a new watch (after all, there’s no cost to doing this and potential benefit), and trust but verify when purchasing used. So, if I purchase from the secondhand market I will ask for papers but not necessarily turn down a deal if they are missing. I have looked carefully at what you guys have to say about conducting transactions online and I will adhere to that advice in the strictest sense. I think my questions have been answered and I do appreciate everyone that responded.

Same for me. I don't want to risk buying stolen goods and a full set is a bit more of a safeguard against that.

Agreed........ Nice to have though (and would buy a watch with papers over one without) .... That said, I haven't looked at the papers since I bought my watch....Buyer should really know what he or she is buying...

Depend of whether you are flipping or buying for yourself, and who you are buying from. I bought two different ceramic models without box and papers from different trusted sellers here and they are completely legit as confirmed by RSC. I’m both cases I paid significantly less than with box and papers and in fact from what I’ve seen the value of the sub in the pre owned market has increased significantly even without the documents.

I think it's nice to have box and papers if you're the original owner as a momentum after that when you're selling the watch the new owner's name will not be on the papers so if I'm someone buying a watch that's used why worry about who owned it before me I would be more concerned about the service history.
