I have both and love both (my YM has the rhodium dial, though). I rotate between the two often and would have a hard time choosing one over the other, but would probably go Sub over YM if I had to. However, if I were you with a GMT I'd probably go for the YM, especially since it's less common. Tough call, good luck.

I think a 16610 will have a bit of redundancy with the black dial of the Coke GMT and the aluminum bezel. The improved clasp and ceramic bezel of a 116610 is a different story. That said, the Yachtmaster offers something a bit more unique (perhaps flashy, maybe elegant, a tiny bit extravagant, but definitely beautiful) and the three color options likely won’t overlap (not sure the dial color of your DJ II though). The 116622 Yachtmasters also have full platinum bezels (vs the platinum insert on the older version) and have the easy-link clasps, which are amazing.
At the moment, my Rolexes are a BLNR and a Dark Rhodium YM. The Batman is the workhorse and the YM classes things up without being too uptight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had a YM for a number of years after a Sub Kermit.
I liked the YM but often struggled with definition when telling the time at a glance. Also, the platinum bezel scratched quite a bit. When I got my BLNR it was good to get back to a dark face and better definition when telling the time. That said, if I was in your shoes I would consider the blue dial YM. |

If you want to follow the herd then go for the Submariner but personally I much prefer the 16622.

I love the YM. I think it's gorgous BUT... I saw a post where someone said a feather could just about scratch the bezel and that was enough to turn me off. I know watches are meant to be worn (and my watches get many tiny scratches) but I just don't want them on the bezel.

I have the sub but honestly love the blue dial yachtmaster. The yachmaster has a level of a refinement the sub lacks and is just a tad more slender (in terms of height) which is nice for those of use that wear dress shirts often.
Out in the wild I will often see GMT's, Submariners, and Datejusts - rarely do I see yachmasters. |

I will say though, the Rhodium and blue dials on the YM are amazing. With regards to fit, the YM is the most comfortable Rolex I've ever worn. The YM is also way more rare in the wild, which is a huge plus to me. I guess, if you had a sizable collection and this wouldn't be a daily, I'd go YM. If, however, this watch is meant to be worn alot, then you need something more durable...i.e. a sub.

The feel of the two watches is totally different. The Yacht Master feels more elegant and special. I also love the case which is I feel thinner and curves at the lugs. It feels more comfortable than my Sub C for sure.
However ..... The black sub is a timeless beauty that everyone should experience. I have both but although I am over the moon with my blue dialed yacht master I feel the all black Submariner C is a more versatile watch that belongs in any occasion. It’s a matter of what you are looking for yourself. For me it was both. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Submariner or Yachtmaster?

You said what I was trying to say much better! The YachtMaster is indeed one of the most if not the most comfortable Rolex I have ever owned. But I wouldn’t have owned it as a daily all around watch either. That bezel is easily scratched to be an all a rounder daily wearer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I owned a blue dial YM for a couple of years. I had zero issue with scratches on the bezel. I think the ceramic sub bezel is probably more scratch resistant, I would not let that be a deciding factor. The YM is WAY more comfortable to wear IMO. The sub has more sharp edges. I also prefer the PCLs on the YM. The only reason I flipped mine was because I simply wasn’t wearing it enough. I traded it towards a 5 digit sub TT serti dial.

The whole scratch magnet theory is vastly exaggerated. In three and a half years' ownership I haven't made single scratch or mark on the bezel of my 116622, or at least that I could see with the naked eye.
Metal bezels will scratch depending on how you treat your pieces, unless they're made of tungsten carbide. In truth I'm careful but only with the luxury watches, I don't hit them against door knobs, seatbelt buckles or what have you. I don't drop them on the furniture when I take them off, they sit on a velvet pad or go to the watch box. With cheap watches I'm less careful and that is fun too, knowing it's not the end of the world is you scratch it or ding it. In fact, I hit something with a ceramic bezel diver and it chipped. I don't know where or when ot happened but I'm sure it was not a very strong knock or I would have checked the watch instantly and remembered it. It's odd considering I have two almost identical divers and one is intact being treated as beater and the other one chipped with very little usage. So to those who believe ceramic is the solution, from experience it's not. These things break and chip easier than you might think. And obviously you can't refinish a damaged ceramic bezel. |

Submariner is a cornerstone in a Rolex collection. It belongs and takes precedence to the YM imo. The YM is a beautiful piece, and worth adding down the track. But doesn’t belong until after the submariner.

Unless, of course, one just doesn't like the sub. There are some rare birds around here, fyi. I'll have nothing to do with a ceramic bezel, and the current sub is just too big for me.

The OP suggested the sub and YM as the two models considered for the next addition. Between the two and understanding his lineup, the sub would be my next piece given its heritage and iconic status to the brand. Also a very versatile model. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would pick Sub because it's a more versatile and iconic watch. However, I did try the YM rhodium by chance a couple of weeks ago and it is still on my mind. Beautiful watch indeed.

I have both, although pre-ceramic sub. Subs are a classic, no doubt, and very popular for a reason. For me, YM Blue dial would be my pick. As noted above, the concerns regarding the bezel are overblown, I wear it the same as any other watch and it's not an issue. It's a matter of preference, good luck with your choice - there is no right or wrong.

Interesting, I thought for sure that was part of the reason that the previous gen could be had for like three or four grand less.

I think, and I’m just guessing, it’s just what the market will pay for. The 6 digit reference gets the better clasp, a slightly better shaped(imo) bezel and the end links are flush with the lugs. All those things add up and I know if the blue YM had been closer in price to the 5 digit, I may have gone that route but the 3-4K was enough to keep me in a 5 digit. Used markets really are market driven and I think that’s where you see the price disparity. |
