Lol. Clearly he intended to use the word pedestrian. I think a Submariner is the exact opposite of pedestrian. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for a few submariner owners

I think most Sub owners feel like a “pedestrian” when walking down the sidewalk.

Seems like an exotic adjective to use for a watch? I do not think it makes much sense..perhaps that the watch does what it should and in a reliable way? But then a again it is not a quartz so that is not very logical either. Maybe he was trying to use a "fancy" word lol.

Maybe he thought the watch was too young for you.

Whatever, ignore it all, sometimes jealousy is hard to control.

Lol, this was all in good fun. my group of friends are all in our 30’s. We do beat on each other pretty hard but in good fun. I thought it was funny so I posted it. Nothing to be jealous about, group of guys are all Type A guys in NYC, so this is the norm. I grew up away from NYC so I tend to be more normal. The word used was just funny... even if he meant pedestrian. :)

My usual come back when I get an insult is that when he goes bankrupt, I’ll buy is mansion for $.25 on the dollar. :). Lol

Separatley, I insulted his last C class commuter car so much so he upgraded it to the new E class. I told him it was a girls car daily. It’s only fun when people care about the insults

:)

Sam zell once said when I go past 60mph on my bike. I really just don’t care who’s behind me...

Does not sound very A type if he is unaware of what a basic adjective like this means. Sorry.

I still don’t really know what pedantic means or how to use it in a sentence lol.

He also told me that I should not be buying any Rolex at Msrp. Especially a sub. Kept telling me he gets it wholesale price.

I just get a good laugh out of these things

The sub isn’t pedantic. A watch or an inanimate object can’t be pedantic. However, the people that buy a sub tend to be pedantic. Ironically, my reply to you is pedantic.

Would it be pedantic if worn on your ankle instead of the wrist?

We are in a whirlpool of pedantry here..... I believe the original meaning was indeed applicable to the object/individual... i.e. the original Greek "pedant" is the slave who took the kids to school.... now the meaning has evolved describing a human trait of picking on the insignificant.... I guess any timepiece is a slave to our relationship with relativity....

To expand on what Uber said, pedantic means stodgily or ostentatiously learned. The connotation is of a person who goes out of his way to show off to others what he knows about something, often unimaginatively, by focusing on minutiae. The irony of using the word incorrectly is that your friend actually made a display of what he didn't know.

Pedantic is an odd word to use to try and describe a watch.

Honestly, it's not odd. It's just wrong. His friend clearly meant something else, and simply used a word he (incorrectly) thought conveyed that meaning. As others have said, he most likely meant pedestrian, indicating he thinks the Sub is ordinary and boring.

he used it right. pedestrian is a similar word though.

pedantic was probably taken to mean unimaginative, or common, or mainstream...you know, lacking uniqueness.

snarky, but his AP would be considered pedantic against a RM 022

no he didn't
no it isn't
if you can "take a word to mean" anything you like then you essentially evolve the word... of course this has to become a collective misconception to become mainstream...

by this logic I have decided the sub is geranium :)

It's a fine line, but I think one is granted latitude on one's pedantry when dealing with misconceptions about the meaning of the word "pedantic."

I don't think he used the optimal diction unless he meant the escapement was pendant like in keeping time.

I think he meant it was boring but pedantic implies a metronomic (boring) aspect to a delivery of communication, like Ben Stein in Ferris Buller's day off, which coincidentally closely mirrored my high school experience.

Pedantic
He forgot that the watch that gave life to his green swatch lookalike was the black sub
