Exactly. Lay the watch, don’t let the watch lay you...lol

Put it in the tray where my keys and wallet go as well. Couldn't possibly care less about how I place it, but I don't think I've ever placed it face down.

Interesting video! Maybe I'll give the crown side a go. Also means I get to see the dial at night

FYI, those photos aren't mine, just searched for pics to give examples but now that you mentioned it... I can't stop looking at the middle one. What's going on with it???

Watch Etiquette.

Theres a whole Etiquette that relates to this, I was corrected by a well seasoned watch maker when placing a watch down that he'd just shown me,

He demonstrated the way to lessen damage to the case back caused by contact by the bracelet.

I did the same in an AD, the response was "it wont matter as it has stickers on it to protect it!" ummm? but all stickers are removed at the point of sale... so later on it will matter!

I'm happy with what I was taught and will continue to do as I was shown

On my wooden dresser, on my bathroom counter, on my kitchen marble counter, on my wooden coffee table.. All face up.

Pretty much I lay it down wherever I want.

My watch is my daily. Scratches are inevitable.

I use the rest position to offset the deviation when worn, generally either 9up or 3up depending on the watch, whichever gets me closer to 0 s/d on average. For example my PO likes 9up, my YM prefers 3up.

I lay mine down on a bed of fresh rose petals changed each day by my man Jeeves
This not only protects them but makes them smell rarther pleasant when put on the next day.

Typically away in the safe either in a watch roll or Oakley vault, but if I ever place them down on the table etc it’s always crown down.

AD said resting watches on their crown side should never be done

That’s ridiculous...

your watch’s resting position is an integral part of adjusting it in order to make the watch as accurate as possible. Every watch will need it’s own resting position(s) depending on the speed at which it runs when being worn. If the watch runs fast when worn typically put it on its side (crown up or down depending on the amount of slow down needed) if it runs slow rest it face up.

However, I believe, theoretically, laying dial flat puts the least stress on the balance pivot; this is also why the flat position yields the highest amplitude due to lower resistance.

I believe the opposite is true, resting the watch dial up and therefore having the balance support solely by the pivot is more stressful than the alternative. However, in reality modern mechanical movements a pretty resilient to this stuff, not likely to make a difference.

I worry about the metal of my watch scratching the countertop more than I worry about the watch. Rolex wants us to use the watches. We should figure out how Hilary laid his down when he was climbing Everest.

Pretty sure it doesn't matter it wouldn't make a difference in two of the watches in that picture.

I don't think about it much, just make sure it's on something soft.
