I also like his Hanhart 417 Chronograph...

Given the past and upcoming auctions, I would rather have Jack Nicklaus' Day-Date...that one is really battle-tested...

Agree, I think Nicklaus' Day-Date should be much more valuable than this watch.

It's tough to get into the minds of people that have millions to spend on hobbies but I would tend to agree with this.

I'll take the under.

Came here to say this. It's really a stretch on Phillips' part to even call this a McQueen watch. I suppose they're just doing their job as the auction house to generate hype, but that doesn't make it right.

and there's no proof that McQueen ever even handled or saw the damn thing, it's not like he engraved it himself...

Did any of you read the article. The watch was bought circa 1964 by McQueen and gifted to the stunt man in the late 70's, it most definitely had a McQueen connection.
And to correct another post, Paul Newman gifted his Daytona to one of his daughter's former boyfriends, that's who sold it.
In the old fashioned sense, gifting a watch that you've worn yourself and made memories with is much more personal than just buying them a new one.

The Great Escape, Bullitt, Papillon, and The Magnificent Seven are four movies that any movie buff should have seen. McQueen pretty much defined tough guy cool!!! Not too mention he was one hell of an actor.

Just wondering if there's documentation to prove this is the one that now wasn't lost in the fire. My guess is someone will go off the charts like the Neuman Daytona. I'm sure there will be a lot of hype.

I don't understand. Doesn't the inscription prove it's not McQueen's watch? I mean, it's FROM him not TO him. Am I taking crazy pills?

In this market anything tying a watch to Newman or McQueen and Brando, who are actually bigger stars than PN, will fetch a lot more money than the high estimate, esp when buyers will not judge on how McQueen this watch is but rather is there an opportunity to buy his 5512 or another of his watches that will be as coveted in the near future, and if the answer is no, then this will fall into that gap and the price will rocket. Opportunity is more important than absolute provenance in this kind of hyped up auction.

Steve McQueen Sub at Auction in October

As some may not have read the entire article the OP shared, the watch belonged to BOTH McQueen and the stuntman who received it as a gift - but sequentially.

Based on its serial number we know it was purchased and worn for years before being gifted to the stuntman years later.

From the article:
“Other watches, even other Rolex Submariners, have appeared in public with established McQueen provenance, but none with this level of personalization. In fact, the present watch is the earliest McQueen-owned Submariner known, a reference 5513 dating to 1964 and gifted to Loren Janes likely in the mid-to-late 1970s as recollected by the surviving Janes family members.

Elevating its importance in the field of elite collectors’ watches, it is the only known Steve McQueen watch to include his name engraved on the caseback, indisputably connecting the watch to its legendary former owner. Furthermore, with its passionate and emphatic dedication to Janes, no other McQueen-owned timepiece has been seen that features such an endearing and personalized engraving.”

This is an almost parallel life story as PLN’s Daytona that he gifted to his son-in-law (but in PLN’s case it was a more casual gift).

Then - amazingly the watch survived a fire, had a complimentary RSC restoration, and lives for another day. The traces of soot are like icing on the cake for an ultra-riche client to buy as a Christmas present for her man (my wild guess).

All said, my thought is a telephone buyer from overseas will likely prevail at something South of $5Million including premium.

Exactly.

More of a curiosity over who owned it rather than the quality of the watch.

Worn by Steve McQueen?

Why Doesn't someone get in touch with Phillips and ask? Hold On! I just have,

The response from Philips (Alex Ghotbi) "Cool or what!"

The watch was first owned by Steve McQueen, as documented in the letter from Loren Janes, before it was gifted to Mr. Janes. Please see the attached scan.

The watch is a reference 5513 and its movement is a Rolex caliber 1530, which is correct for a ref. 5513.

Best

Alex

Never suggested anyone read all of the posts - just the article. All the info I shared was in that article.

And as others who did read the entire article are now finding confirmation - it WAS Steve’s for many years before being gifted to his lifelong stuntman friend.

I wasn't being critical of your post...you read the article. It was the other posters who continued to make comments that were flat out wrong if they had read first.

This watch is such a dud on so many levels...decent provenance but not great and if the watch was presented in the vintage forums by a potential buyer seeking expert advice, the overwhelming response would be pass unless the asking price was a song.

Phillips hit a grand slam on the PNPN and now seems to be desperately looking to get lightening to strike twice in the same place with this watch, that horrible Elvis Omega and who knows what will come next, maybe a Charlie Sheen special from when he was Wildthing in 'Major League'...

My guess is some schmoe pays 900k for this frankenwatch.

Wait, its provenance is supported by a letter from the current owner stating it was a gift from Steve McQueen. All other other evidence perished in a fire.

That's like saying I can pardon myself but won't right?

This is soooooo cool. What a story! Maybe this story and the forthcoming auction will cause an uptick in values for Subs? Much like the recent Daytona phenomenon?
