I think it's stockholder pressure that pushes brands to do this. Unless Rolex goes public, I don't think we have to worry about it.

Rolex uses the 'car dealership' model and is quite happy with it. It wont change anytime soon. They can more tightly control their products and brand this way, which they want to do WAY MORE than make more money.
