Glad for the post and the narrative represented by the pictures. Using my scuffed up Explorer II in Accra, Ghana below; my daily wearer beginning this month will be my days old 126660 DSSD. And yes, I dive, but certainly nothing in the realm of those who would wear a DSSD professionally.

One of the great things about Rolex is that it can be a tool and a jewel, so arguments about which it is are perhaps unnecessary. No where did I put my Apple Watch? :-)

I know right? Makes one thankful it is a watch forum. :-)

Well-said... thx ! And nice pic!

It’s why I got my 14060M. Wanted the best - simple diver out there. I’d prefer a matte dial and painted indicies but oh well.

Very cool!

On a trip, I don't like to leave my watch anywhere, but not sure I'd wear it on a technical mtn bike ride. I've crashed enough to not take that risk.

Very brave of you.
Thanks for the pics!

Great pictures of the watch with varying scenes in the background. Looks like a great time.

No denying the "tool watch" DNA. Still capable of such but many won't risk the potential cost of using one as such. Everyone claps the ones that do on the back and says, "well done." Truth is Rolex is a luxury watch with tool watch genes but a bit too pricey these days to casually use as such. Losing one or damaging one is daunting too most. When they were used for diving there weren't many alternatives. Now-a-days there are many alternatives and many are more competent and much less expensive. No longer a "tool watch" but now jewelry, a "jewel watch."

Lol! Wear it while changing a flat tire on the side of the road. Then it's a tool watch.

I think a case can be made that ceramic is less "tool-y" than aluminum, just because it can break while aluminum won't. But on literally every other measure, modern Rolexes are sturdier and more tool-y than ever.

I think the folks who say otherwise are confusing appearance with functionality. A hammer with a polished shaft is still a tool -- it's just a prettier tool.

That's not an opinion it's just a bitter post from a grumpy old man who doesn't know the difference between 6 and a dozen.

OP - looks like a great trip with a nice watch. Austria / Germany are beautiful countries.

I wore my SeaDweller 16600 anywhere and everywhere for 20 years - luckily when the bracelet finally failed I was walking out of the train station and not in the 5m of water that I'd been swimming in the weekend before.

Nice! And I do agree 100%

I wear mine on any occasion, the 34mm OP is the original toolwatch anyway so no reason not to wear it

Very nice trip indeed, thank you for sharing OP!
I'm glad people are using their Rolexes in everyday activities and not just keeping them wrapped in cotton wool in a safe.

If you're coming from PP, Lange then it's a tool watch, if you're coming from Tag and Timex then it's jewellery.

I agree Neil, and that was part of my point.. it’s all about perspective and who is wearing the watch. Like likestheshiny said above, a “pretty” tool is still a tool if you use it as such. :cheers!:

Ha, I hear ya! I did ask before about the downhill portion of the ride since it was a pretty steep 4000 feet descent and was told the downhill was flat surfaces (vs uphill which was mostly rough trails)... otherwise I would have left the BLNR in the safe - 2 weekends earlier I took a moderately bad spill doing downhill mtb at mt snow in Vermont (wore my g shock).

I guess you can dive or mountain climb with a Patek or a Lange but that doesn’t make them tool watches. Rolex watches are very robust watches and they will hold up very well. They have been rather “tarted up” in recent years and I’d rather have brushed surfaces than PCLs for a watch that is going to do have duty.

6 digit references are better beaters than 5 digit references IMO. Both work but the newer model can take a beating and keep on ticking while looking new.

They're tool watches if they are used as intended. If one doesn't time with a Sub/Daytona or track dual zones with a GMT, etc. then they are more jewelry. I don't baby any mine. Take them all over the world, take them on the ice, in the ocean, in the dessert, on the back streets. If they are stolen, have insurance. If they are damaged, go to RSC.

Great tool watch.

Off topic....How do you like your Ebike? (See, I noticed the Bosch thing) I just bought a Trek XM700+. To go with my BLNR, of course.
