I like a bit of variety.

I can see buying a couple of the same models if I planned to give them away to family members.

I could see having multiple of the same models but different color (like me and many others here having a black and green Sub), but why two or more identical watches?

It's all relative....I really don't see a problem either....but it'd be a different story if you ask that question to the wife.

Problem? What problem?

I think it’s only a problem when the 100th duplicate arrives in the collection.

I don’t buy duplicates but I do have different variations of the same models. I like GMTs and Subs.

Nope...and I think it is a waste. If you have the means to buy multiple Rolex, buy something different and expand your inventory.

Everything on you favorite watch can be replaced if damaged.

Nice one! IMO this isn’t duplication as they’re all distinctive in some way (movement, case, ref).

I wish there was a modern 40mm reverse panda like that one for sale today.

Such a shame these modern disks are not full circles. The original look so much better.

Yes, I have nine 16710's. They are all different, one of each bezel reference of the SEL's, seven are NOS, so two to go. Yes, I now this is an issue.

My brother and I had a discussion this week. Which would you rather have:

Option 1 Black Sub + Batman (or Pepsi)
Or
Option 2 Black GMT + Hulk

He picked option 2 and I picked option 1. I think you win with picking all of the above!

Unless it's an investment, isn't buying multiples of the same watch just a waste of money?

I don't see a problem with it. Buy what you like and what you want in your collection. Currently I have multiples of a few references but that's only because I ran across a few deals too good to pass up. I've been in no great hurry to get rid of the duplicates but I'm considering a couple other watches and two or three of these would go to fund those purchases

This is it—-for me—-in a nutshell. I bought most of my duplicates back when prices were reasonable, and I ran across some deals I couldn’t refuse. I would buy Rolex Sport watches for $3,500-$4,000 all day long and did often times back in the day. Unfortunately prices have gotten so out-of-hand that my buying is mostly frozen for the moment. I couldn’t replace my collection in today’s second-hand pricing. Makes me sad

Some of the watches in this thread would be very difficult to replace. Having a daily wear favourite or two and a pristine example (or two) for careful use makes perfect sense to me. I want my 16710 pristine and I don't know how loaded I'd have to be before paying 2018 16710 prices wouldn't be a concern. So I'll probably be opting for the Tudor at some point.
When that Nigerian prince comes through for me I'd love a collection of multiple references of the same models. This surely isn't a waste but what any mad wealthy Rolex collector would do.
