I picked up my blue YM at the weekend, having recently parted with an Explorer 1 after a few months (which I found too boring and restrained).

To me, the YM is brilliant. Although it is quite subdued (the platinum bezel is more sedate than the ceramic bezels on most professional models), the watch has a remarkable presence. My understanding is that - legend has it - this was meant to be a replacement/upgrade for the submariner. I don't know if that's true, but to me it definitely feels like a "special" version of the sub.

The blue dial is so much more appealing (to me) than the standard black dial you get on Subs, GMTs and Sea-Dwellers. My sister in law was looking at my watch the other day, and said that she could see a hint of purple in the dial, which I do see every now and again (perhaps indigo is a more accurate colour description).

The platinum bezel also sets this model apart. Seeing as so many of the stainless steel professional models have either steel or ceramic bezels, to have one in solid platinum (without having to buy the whole watch made of PM) is a needless but worthwhile extravagance which makes it more precious (literally) than a number of the other steel models.

Although people seem to complain about the price (£8,500 in the UK), to me this seems like relatively good value. I was close to buying a Milgauss, which is all steel and has no date and is still £6,050. For "only" an extra £2,500, I have a date, timer functionality of the bezel and a good amount of platinum, which I don't believe you can get on any other Rolex model unless paying £30k+ for a full platinum watch.

Kudos for trying something off the beaten path. Enjoy your little marvel!

If you mostly wear jeans like me than the YM1 blue dial is not a bad choice. When I purchased my first 40mm Rolex in summer of 2014, I wanted something that could go with anything so I chose the platinum dial instead of blue. I also had $6500 to spend, which the blue dial costed 10k. I wanted to have a his hers as well! They only make the blue dial for the 40mm, as of summer of 2016 Rolex discontinued the platinum dial. I feel Rolex did this to cut costs.

Beautiful.

In the era of fat cases and chunky-butt lugs the YM thankfully escaped Rolex's re-design team and retained sexy-curve proportions. As time goes on they just look better and better.

IMO, the best watch Rolex makes right now. It’s not blocky, lugs are a reasonable size, slim case, none of this ceramic silliness. Just pure class and great looks. Just needs the updated movement.
