Thanks for your response Brian, really appreciate it. I really love dive watches which is why letting the Speedmaster go doesn’t present too much of an issue. Worry that i might regret flipping the 16610 though. Is struggle to find another G serial.

That being said I’d trade either of those watches for an SD4K without a second thought, and I’m having a tough time rejecting the idea of trading both for an SD4K. If it’s at all feasible I’d try to sell the Sub keep the Speedy and get the SD4K. If you can pull that off you have upgraded your dive watch situation and still have the perfect two watch rotation.

If it is not economically feasible I’d probably do the trade, and save up for a used Speedy in the future.

One thing to consider is that if you view the SD4K as an investment as a lot of guys here do, wearing it as a daily is going to cause a lot of stress every time you bang it off a doorknob or one of your kids grab onto and pull the bracelet.

For what it’s worth I don’t find the SD4K to be any more awkward or uncomfortable than the other two it would be perfectly suited for a daily watch.
Thanks for your detailed response. I did think I had the perfect duo with my favourite submariner and the Speedmaster but then I got the sd4k bug. 40mm, satin dial, helium escape etc. My concern is whether the sd4k will make for a comfortable daily wear for all occasions. Given I missed the boat, it will be almost impossible to try one at an AD.

Hey Lee,

Thanks for your response. How comfortable do you find the sd4k. Could this be your one and only?

My thought exactly, just my opinion. I was able to pick up my current g serial in like new condition and I can assure you I won't be letting that one go. Is yours in pristine shape?

Do it. The SS black dial sub is boring. Not even a seadweller fan.

Once you've sized it correctly its just as comfortable as any other sports models Rolex do. It may even be slightly more comfortable as although it sits slightly higher its smaller than the ceramic subs. It'll probably wear very similar to your non ceramic sub but with a bit more heft in the weight department

Also I have very small wrists and its fine I had to remove 3 links and just adjust the glidelock accordingly

The Speedy can be easily replaced, and prob at a decent price too.

The SD4k is going to be harder and harder to come by as time goes on.

All I can say is that I've been down this road a few times before and have regretted letting go of difficult pieces to reaquire in similar or better condition. Best of luck with the decision. The SD4000 is a very cool piece for sure. Also - it should be noted that my opinion is not based on how much I personally like the SD4000, it's based on regretting letting go of hard to replace models for the new watch buzz...

It will make a comfortable daily wear watch. I guess it’s heavier and slightly taller than your Sub, but having an appropriate number of links and the flexibility of the glidelock clasp will ensure the fit is perfect no matter how swollen your wrist is from heat or cold, and if you just feel like wearing it really loose for a while you can pop open the diver extension.

I doubt the slight extra weight will do anything more than remind you that you are wearing your grail watch. It might be a tiny bit tougher to get it under shirt sleeves, but not much of an issue.

This gives quite a lot of variety with the two watches.

I do however have a real hankering for the Sd4k and my budget does not allow me to add so I am considering trading the sub and moon watch.

Welcome your thoughts on moving the two watches to become a one watch Sd4k owner.

Thanks

Don't do that.

You've got two classics.

Are you open to an alternate idea?

Keep both of your current watches for smaller watches that each put a foot into chronograph and diver world. ADD an Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph, which will give you a larger, modern movement, ceramic, GMT, etc. Diver and which can be bought at huge discounts. Costs not much, and doesn't get rid of your potential collectibles.

Tough call You have to think about how many watches do you have in your collection. Can you live without the Moonwatch. The Sea-dweller can replace the Sub.

If it was me, i would keep the moonwatch and offer money and sub for the SD

My personal preference would be to keep the sub and speedy for reasons already listed. But, as also mentioned, do what makes you happy.

I wouldn’t trade the G series 16610T.

I finally purchased a 5 digit series Sub today and the later produced ones can be difficult fo find. The original owner of my Sub purchased it in 2009.

Starting with the M, 16610T got the engraved rehaut. Then later ones got the anti- reflective coating on the crystal which is really nice and random serial #s.

While these late manufacturered Subs may or may not generate more interested / demand down the road, who knows. Currently 5 digit series GMTs seem to be getting all the attention.

I also like the ability to change bezels and honestly there is something about the 16610. Dial, bezel and case just “pop” more than most other models (including ceramic Subs).

I sort of have what you are willing to trade... and I was interested in the SD4Kc as well, because I wanted the date w/o the cyclops. But the thickness and busy bezel was what drove me away.

My thoughts are that the SD4K is the best from a value standpoint, and can easily replace the sub. But nothing is going to replace the speedy, it's just a iconic, easy to read, fun to play with watch (it has buttons!!). But it can be had for below $3K easily. So you will probably buy back the speedy at some point, just a warning to your wallet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already had the 42mm planet ocean 8500. Lovely watch but wasn’t very well balanced and was somewhat heavier than the sd4k. The 9300 is a different beast altogether at nearly 18mm thick.

Ultimately, I think the only watch that settles the sd4k itch is going to be the sd4k

Thanks for your response, I totally get where you are coming from with the later 16610s. They are becoming more difficult and costly to source should I decide I want to pick one up in the future.

The collector/hoarder in me says keep both, add the SD. As you rightly say, the last of the 5-digit subs are difficult to come by. For certain 5-dig models, these are the cream if you’re looking for something pristine, IMO.

Oh the other hand, I’m not a fan of any sub date (save the matte dial 16800 perhaps). The SD4K is a personal favourite of mine (my father has one, alongside the aforementioned subs). Ultramodern with modest proportions - really beats the SubC and basically everything else in the dive watch market.

The heart wants what the heart wants.

I dont know if you have tried the SD4K on, and would suggest that is the very first thing you do if you have not already done so.

If it is "the one" then I would do the trade and then save up for another moon watch to fill that gap in the future, as although the SD is a fantastic watch, there will be those occasions that (since you have experianced living with a choice) you will wish you had a second watch to choose from again.

I don't like the SD's proportions, nor am I a fan of the bezel print.

I say keep what you already have.
