Wow, shipping and handling of a watch glass $46! Obviously the elves that have to carry it from Geneva have had a pay rise

Did you work out how it happened? The only fix is a crystal change. There is no way I could wait till service time if it was me.

The scratch is ugly for certain. Not too certain about the force needed to do that. Depending on how it happened there could be more damage than seen.

I can wear them and later fix this problem replacing the glass. Maybe You know, how can identify is it a scratch or crack. If I can swim with them or not.

Since there could be damage to the seal on the crystal I wouldn't swim with it. Cracks propagate through the crystal not so with scratches. Look from the side. A crack would be deep. Pressure testing could give you some certainty as to whether it's water resistant or not.

Take it to your dealer and have them pressure test it. I doubt it makes any difference based on the picture. I'd probably just deal with the scratch, but if it bothers you, get a new crystal. Not a big deal. |

The lesson learned is don't buy your significant other any diamonds. Too much risk for watches.

I read on a thread of a similar situation. That guy was walking side by side with his wife who had on a diamond ring. The arms swinging next to each other eventually collided with the diamond ring swiping across the surface of the crystal. The scratch shape and placement looked very similar to yours.

Well, based on your location Saint-Petersburg, I assume Russia I understand why you didn't remember where you scratch it. Good luck with your watch

The crystal can get a light scratch out of nowhere. Sometimes, it can also be some weird staining that goes away. The crystal can get chipped too.

'sapphire crystal is the 2nd hardest material on earth therefor can only be scratched by a diamond' is a myth. Though diamonds are definitely like kryptonite.

I recently scratched the cyclops on my 116610LN by accidentally scraping it on the bottom of a pool. I was actually pretty surprised it scratched from that, but it did, feel it / see it on the cyclops. Only way to fix these sapphire crystals is replacement.
Sorry. |

Dear friends! Have been to the AD today, the watch master, looking at the watch, said that the scratch is all over sapphire, maybe the touch of my wife's jewel on her ring. I am wearing Rolex on the left hand and she is wearing jewel ring on the right hand. I asked about whether I can swim in this watch. He told me, that the impermeability is not damaged and it is only a scratch and Rolex has thick sapphire. So I can still swim in them. The problem is that in Russia the replacement of the glass will take 4-6 months, because they have to send the watch to Switzerland. So I decide to wear them half a year and then will do the replacement.

That’s good to know, however just because you wait half a year does not mean Rolex will hold your place in like. In half a year from now when you send it in they will make you wait another 4-6 months from that time (or whatever their wait is). |

If you want to try a home remedy I recommend applying a thin slice of cucumber approximately 1.75mm thick. Leave for 3 hours and then check the scratch.

Anyone with experience grinding knows that the hardness of the material being ground as compared to the wheel does not guarantee material removal, wheel wear or both.
The wheel breaking down (because it’s softer than what it’s grinding) is what helps the wheel remove material. So, it is actually quite easy to scratch sapphire on concrete or brick, even though they are both much softer than sapphire. Chipping is another matter but catching the edge of the crystal on something that is reasonably hard and also reasonably sharp (so the force is concentrated) is easy to chip sapphire. Tungsten carbide acts the same way. Wicked hard and tough most of the time but knock it against a piece of (much softer) cold rolled steel the wrong way and it’ll chip easily. |
