Jeremy, the choice is simple, what ever makes YOU happy. The new Day-Date II in Platinum is a stunning watch. They are readily available from AD'S. 30% discount on this watch at the moment is certainly possible. Goodluck

The DD II doesn't do it for me.
I think its too big as my sole dress watch.
It seems more sporty also I do not care for the
dial options on it.

If I had a DD Id like a DDII but I do not have 7 figures a year....

Do what ever makes you happy, life's too short. However you can condsider a WG DD at half the price of the Platinum one and this way you get to keep some of the watches you already have.

I wish there was no sales tax on used stuff in Ontario, theres 13% tax on everything here, whether its new or used.

Go for what you like and don't worry about how it will look. If you like it, that's all that counts.

I had several Rolexes (SS and TT) before I found that special watch (DD) and it's all I wear now. It's my daily watch (see below) and I'm extremely pleased with it.

By the way, my AD said that platinum is softer than gold and will scratch easier. He also said it's 30 percent heavier than gold. I don't know, I'm just relaying what he said.

I think the newer 41mm DD in Plat. is a perfect watch to have, if you only had one really good watch. So I would say, it would be a good move. Sell a bunch of watches you have, get one really good one and then wear it all the time!

Plat. is heavier, more expensive, and harder to work with than Gold. Need special tools. Get a copy of IWC's in-house magazine. the last issue before the current issue out, and there is a good cover story article on their use of Platinum in their watches, and all the special process that are needed when working with Plat. for watch making. Shoudl answer most of your questions.

Really? That's insane. Come to Alberta, then Yes, take a vacation to Calgary... only -35 celsius right now, just a bit balmy.

You Ontarians and your taxes!

The thinking in Alberta is taxes have already been paid on the original, so thus, no GST is charged for anything used. Cars, houses...

Sell 'em all if you think that's what needs to be done...all except the DSSD of course!

Seriously, the only thing I would caution against is that always present desire of us WIS to 'Sell everything for the one holy grail watch'...only to wake up months later and start to think, "You know what...if I sell this one extremely pricey watch I could buy a pretty diverse collection of multiple watches that could be used in many different settings." It's a painful cycle that will lead you back to this exact same place. Good luck w/ your ultimate decision & please keep us posted on your choice.

I would take it slow and really think through it. It really does not make sense IMHO to lose a ton of money selling "right now" Your GF sounds pretty wise. Hang on - maybe things change and you are able to simply throw that DD II Plat right into the mix...

The more I look at the DD II the less I like it....
Seems the smooth bezel just looks weird!

If I had very large wrists (mine are 6 & 3/4 in) I think it would be another story.
If they made a SS DJ 41 mm Id have it in a second but I think 41 mm is just too big for dressy occasions with my wrists.

I worry the 36 mm will seem small (it was perfect with my DJ for years till I got my SD and DSSD this past year). I think the weight of the platinum will make up for that :)

I am not worried about selling my watches as I will replace all of them over 2 or 3 years without a worry with others Id want. I think Id get the Glashutte Original Sport Evolution GMT and DSSD again but doubt Id get another DJ, SD or GMT

Always good to upgrade and I'm thinking about the Platinum also. However you are going to lose substantial amounts firstly selling your existing collection to pay for it. Then if you ever change your mind the loss would be very costly.

Get the platinum hands down. You have too many watches for only having two arms anyway =D

I am trying to fund the DD with the other watches I have.
Now that I think about it I don't think my pieces are worth
enough to do that...
It looks like I will have to spend 25k to get a nice complete
used Plat. DD

I would buy a DD no older than 6 years old.

I wouldn't feel bad or regret selling anything I had as Id replace them
all with other watches over time.

I will find it easier in my head to buy 5 watches for a few grand each
over the next three years instead of saving that money in the toy
fund for 3 years to fund one watch...

GMT Id rather the Glashutte Sports Evo. GMT
DJ I will hold my breath and wait for a 41 mm SS version
SD and DSSD will easily be replaced in the future and gives
my GF a nice easy gift to get me haha.

This is the exact watch I want! I hope Lars doesn't mind I am showing
off his watch (this watch is owned by lars-118206 and posted in the DD
photo thread)

Go for a YG Daytona white dial. DD's drop in value too fast

I have no interest in a Daytona or a YG watch.

Sorry but a Daytona is the last Rolex I would buy.
I have no use for a Chrono and if I was to buy a
Chrono there are others Id buy before a Daytona.

If I buy any gold watch it will be a RG DD which face
and romans BUT thats not happening for 10 or 15 years.

If my collection (minus the Breitling and AP) would
sell for enough to pay for the Platy DD used (about 25G)
I would do it in a second BUT I think the value of my collection
is a little below what I need :(

Looks like I will just have to get a couple more pieces before I
get my Platy DD or Platy DDII

Pic of Ice Blue Jubilee on a Platinum DDI with smooth bezel?

Hello,

I'm hoping to buy a used Platinum DDI. I've seen a few around with the Ice Blue Dial (with diamonds), but what I'm really looking for is the Ice Blue Jubilee Dial. So, pretty much what Yume-sama has on Page 1 of this thread, but without the diamond bezel, and without the diamonds on the band. At this point, I'd even settle for a Picture of the thing, but I can't even seem to find that combo as an image anywhere on the net.

Why oh why doesn't the Rolex website have a "build-your-watch" section so that you don't have to use your imagination to construct what a "Platinum Day-Date President in Platinum with smooth bezel, and an Ice Blue Jubilee dial with diamonds" would look like?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Heck, I can't even find a Rolex retailer that has this combo in stock. Seems like it would be a popular combo, but maybe people like the regular smooth Ice Blue dial over the Jubilee? Or maybe it's that once they get this combo in stock it sells immediately?

Platinum as a precious metal is actually harder than the alternatives, not softer. If you do nick it, it has the interesting quality of being able to "heal" itself. These characteristics make it a desirable precious metal and obviously, platinum is more rare than gold. Plus it has a beautiful shine. I think the powder blue dial on the Rolex DD is very beautiful. In terms of collectability, it would be much rarer than DD's made with Gold. As far as I know, Rolex still charges the same rate for maintenance as it's other watches, making it an especially good deal. Having a rare watch like that would be a lot of fun. I have tried it on in stores and I like it: if I could buy it, I would.

The platinum DD is not the same price as the gold model, it is quite a bit more if thats what you meant by them charging the same rate... I do not think the Plat was ever the same price as the gold models.

It is one heavy and beautiful watch

I like the ice blue with romans

Jeremy, you're not crazy.....ok maybe you are, LOL, but I was going through the same thing two months and it took me that long just to calm down and take a deep breath and say...."That watch will still be around and will be even more affordable a couple of years from now when I have the cash to buy it..." whewweh----

Just a dumb thought, why not get a loan? Sell your watches at your own pace. If your dumping them for something else you will probably sell them too cheap and once you have the dd you might miss the others. With a loan you can enjoy the dd, and the others...c what fits and what doesn't!

Go For it!
Platinum is the best!
My cousin has a platinum DD I and he hasn't bought another watch since. It is his daily nightly an all the time watch (unless doing something that would most likely damage it)!
Maybe when I'm 60 I'll get a platinum watch!
