Wimbledon dial, fad?
Like the colour of the dial not sure on the Roman Numerals as they seem to take over the dial. My 1973 Datejust looks a similar colour grey/rhodium .

No Lume?... it's a fake...
The lumed marker at 9 also helps to know which way up the watch is when it's on the bed stand at night. Without that, you could be 6 hours out!... I went to the "Rolex event" yesterday evening at Warwick Castle... Tried on many models, a £55,000 Platinum Daytona... A yellow gold Day Date, then this white gold one, with Meteorite dial... And of course, the now discontinued (apart from existing orders) new GMT... Nothing took my interest better than my own DJ41 Wimbledon... What attracted me to it? Well, I guess it was exactly the quirkiness others don't like. I looked at the stick dials too, but they're so symmetrical and plain in comparison. Someone had thought the date window needed balancing, or that it makes a white line across the face (along with Federer wearing one when he won at Wimbledon - the "Wimbledon" link). The black Romans with green outline are a nod to Rolex green, and I love Romans anyhow. All in, an idiosyncratic watch which stands apart in a room full of diver's watch wearing "sheep". A future classic for sure. |

I saw this on a dealer's wrist in Rolesor and immediately was drawn to the classy yet slightly casual look. The dial is very clever, not lazy at all. The roman numerals are outlined by a thin sliver of green, but it fools the eye into thinking the dial is green. I've never seen that use of color on any other watch. I think it could be a classic, but am secretly hoping they stop making them.

I think the dial was originally offered on the two-tone DJ2. It was a fan favorite which prompted Rolex to bring the dial to the stainless steel DJ41. I think it looks great on the stainless steel with the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet. I own the rhodium stick dial, but I would have considered this dial if it was available when I purchased mine.

Nothing Rolex does is a ”fad”. Rolex is extremely conservative with designs and design changes.

I don't like those green numerals which stand out too much and the one white marker at 9 o'clock seems out out place.
On the other hand, that rhodium dial you have pictured is a beauty! I'm considering getting one. |

It's amazing this dial is getting so much attention (and a nickname too) but it went practically unnoticed when it was on the DJ II.
Lack of SS sports models has everyones attention elsewhere |

I noticed it only after Federer won Wimbledon, and put the DJ41 version on to receive the cup.
I didn't know it existed on the DJII until I started to do research on it. |

I also didn't get it, why the stick at 9? This kept me away from pulling the trigger sooner, but the dial did win me over. After owning it I get it now, besides being the only lume plot it does balance the dial well with the date window and gives more character. Now I can't imagine the dial without it.

I never once thought of this watch as polarizing, but I guess it is. Some people are even willing to be blowhards about it. lol. We're not going to change each others minds. I for one think asymmetry keeps things interesting. Any Rolex with a date complication is already asymmetrical.

This dial will be great for letting you know when it’s 9 o’clock in the dark. Otherwise, it’s the least attractive offering by Rolex, imho.

Dull, dull, dull. Lasted four weeks before I got fed up looking at it's monotone form and traded it... for the DJ41 Wimbledon. Beauty is in the eye etc. but it's also peddled here by many who brainwash others into the mass market that is the dive watch. NB. I didn't say "...that is the Sports watch" as of course the DJ is the most popular sports watch ever. |

I want to like it, but the 9 marker and the painted-on romans just don't do it for me.

I tried a DJII TT on a few years back and it was the watch that opened my eyes to lusting after a DJII. If I was after a TT at the time, I would have purchased it. Its a very classy watch. The low lume is abit of a thinker but I might have looked past it for its beauty.

I got the original one with fluted bezel and oyster bracelet back in 2009/2010. It looked AMAZING in the store. Went in for a GMT but the DJ won me over.
2 days later I never had so much regret in buying a watch. The 9 oclock marketer really bothered me. The lume was next to nothing and I felt the TT and roman numerals looked too old for someone in their late 20s. I ended up trading it towards my first AP. I still love it in pictures and cool to see it gaining popularity but I know its not for me. |
