I think the thieves could have happened upon the situation by chance and probably have experience in thieving things at opportune moments. They saw it was gold and took their chance that maybe it was greatly valuable, possibly not knowing what a Patek is. The car he drove may also have clued them in as to the value of the watch.

I hate hearing stories like this, real or not.

This would not happen in UK, as watch is on left hand wrist and cars are right hand drive, so watch hand is always inside the car and far from the windows. The thief would have to use a knife or firearm to force driver to surrender watch.

Which makes it easier for the thieves to get away on bicycles. The street cyclists really carve it up in NYC. There is zero chance the victim would catch them.

As for driving with arm out the window, I have done that many times but I will now keep my bodily parts inside of the ride at all times
