Although not impossible, Sapphire Crystal's are pretty difficult in general to scratch! In fact, I have never scratched one, but have broken one...and put a nick in another's edge that is virtually impossible to notice without a loop! That said, I have been convinced I have broken or shattered my Sapphire Crystals about a million times...only to find out they were completely unblemished!

I don’t think it’s overkill at all. I am in the window film business and if you have that film on there it will hold the pieces together if the crystal shatters which is a very good thing in my opinion

Unless there's the chance of you being shot in the watch, I think you're good.....

If you are worried get it insured covering damages and then wear the hell out of it.

Very unnecessary just as they are unnecessary on iPhones. Both have very durable crystals/screens.

I've never scratched any of my watch crystals or any of the numerous iPhones screens I've owned over the years.

Enjoy it - don't worry about it.

Totally reasonable question but my experience is that the sapphire is incredibly durable and won’t scratch unless under fairly severe circumstances.

And if so, it’s fairly straightforward to replace it.

One example: I have an 18 year old yacht master and it’s well used, and the metal looks it, but the crystal remains flawless.

Enjoy your beautiful watch!

Absolutely yes overkill, worse yet, it will make the watch less attractive.

Even though people do cover their iPhones and cars with clear wrap to protect them, NONE of them have the hardness as synthetic sapphire.

So, don't worry ... just enjoy the watch. And even if you do happen to scratch the crystal with a diamond, you can get a brand new one next time serviced for around $300.

Can I wear my watch in the shower or is it better to extend my arm outside when the water is running?

Ever think about using protective film to protect the easily-scratched bezels of satin-brushed models, like PP 5167, PP 5711, etc ?

The film would have to be precisely cut and perhaps something that would transmit a satin/brushed finished. In fact, applying the film may even “hide” some existing scratches.

You could make a fortune with this ... Sell them in a 3 pack for $49.

Who wouldn’t pay $49 to protect their 5-figure watch? May even encourage more owners to wear their pieces knowing they are not going to get banged up!

Wow, I did not expect the generous outpouring of great comments and recommendation for my question. My favorite is the duct tape and the bubble wrap. The problem with the duct tape is I used my last roll of tape to keep my bumper from falling off of my car. The protective covering has served me well over the past years for my SpongeBob SquarePants watch. Even though SpongeBob lives in a pineapple under the sea, I have to extend my arm outside when I take a shower.

The glass from.... smartphones (without blaming a curtain company) are meant to break.
The glass from Rolex is meant to last for generations... just stop rubbing your diamonds against it, that's it ;-)
