based on beauty there is no way a sub is a better looking watch. Function, use, ruggedness or whatever i wouldn't disagree.

A YM is a sophisticated sub, more elegant lines and bezel. Doesnt float everyone boat or yacht though.

I will respond with some more fullsome thoughts later today, but for me the difference between the two watches can be summed up as follows (true story):

I bought my blue YM from a large department store in London last summer.

On my way down to the watch room, I stopped off to buy some home wear. I noticed the salesman in that department had a sub. We got talking, I said I was heading down to rolex shortly etc. He told me he’d saved up a couple of years to buy the sub and was really enjoying it as a daily watch.

Now, with no disrespect to that salesman, I think it is very unlikely that he would have saved up to buy a YM. A sub is a very very nice watch which many people aspire to, from your typical Joe Bloggs to high net worth individuals. The YM is not such a watch and is therefore something quite different, and in my view way more special.

Two great watches. Trybkth on and get what sings more to you.

But sub is the most popular for a reason:cheers.

Definitely Submariner. The Yachtmaster is a great watch, but you need a Sub

Submariner, .............. The Yachtmaster actually says “Yachtmaster” on the dial.

Unlesss one is a “master of yachts” ...............

I’d go YM as I prefer the case. Don’t think you can go wrong either way however.

if you want different then get the YM. I prefer the blue dialed version. However, as an owner of a sub, you really can't go wrong with one. good luck on your search

I have both and like both. Aesthetics are very personal so other peoples' opinion is quite useless. Clearly, the YM is positioned higher up the Rolex scale than the Sub. But demand for the Sub is far greater than for the YM. On the contrary, YM is more exclusive and far less common in the wild. I think you need to put them on your wrist and decide. The YM is better for smaller wrists, imo, because of the curvier case shape. Also, what color dial are you thinking? The current grey dial of the 116622 is flat (not like the sparkling 16622) so I would go for the blue or rhodium dials. But if it's your first and only watch, and you think about reselling it, maybe a black Sub is the safest choice.

Sub to me is a boring watch. You can say all you want that its iconic, you need to have one. Not every Rolex owner needs a sub. I don't buy things just because they are long standing in any product line up.

The YM is a step up from the sub, and not just in price point.

This question has been asked quite a few times before. Here's a recent thread where I compared both pieces with side by side pics (I own both):

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=643563

Check out posts #33 for quick overview and #40 for pics.

I got a major scratch on the Sub clasp while taking those pics - but a worthwhile sacrifice if it provides enlightenment!

Having owned both my vote is for the YM!! Here are MY reasons in no particular order..
***I think the YM is a better looking watch
***I like the slimmer case vs the bulky Sub
***Its a dress watch and a sports. It looks good in shorts or a tux
***It is MUCH more rare in the wild. I hate fads or going along with everyone else.

Bottom line, DARE TO BE DIFFERENT my friend!!

Absolutely gorgeous! Looks at home with a pair of jeans or a tux IMO

The ceramics can all start to look a bit similar so I sold my black subc for this with stunning blue dial... altho I did later trade this for the LVc.

Awesome reply’s , thanks everyone who chimed in. I will attempt try them both on if I ever get the opportunity but as we all know that may be impossible in today’s market. The Rhodium dial YM really sings to me. Based on purely looks alone I think I’m drawn more to the YM more than the sub but I appreciate what both watches have to offer. I suspect that which ever option i decide I will always wonder about the other........That’s what I love about this hobby, watches don’t take up a lot of room like cars so buying both over time isn’t out of the realm of possibility

YM more blingy for sure. i prefer YM blue dial. sub date is OK for ur first watch. but YM more stunning more elegance than sub. sub look more sporty and casual.
try both and u will know which one better.
listen carefully to ur heart when u try both😁😁😁

Try them on, that's the only way to know, and attempt to try on the exact model in question. Getting a Sub was my goal for years, I worked hard, saved money, talked to my boss about watches, and tried on his 16610. I was floored that I didn't like it, absolutely shocked. I wrote off Subs completely.

Fast forward 5 years and a few watches later, I casually tried on a GMT and SubC while buying a DSSD. It was late, all 3 watches had just come in, and I had to wait until the next morning to pick up the DSSD. All night I was up thinking how nice that SubC felt on my wrist. Same thing, I was absolutely shocked, I was sure the DSSD was my next watch.

I went with the SubC and really like it, but my point of the story is try them both on if you can, or be ready to flip one or the other if it doesn't speak to you.

In terms of birth order, big brothers are born before little brothers. Therefore the Sub is the big brother of both the YM and the SD.
