Know who makes money investing in antiques?
Antique dealers and antique auctioneers.
Go watch some episodes of Pawn Stars. Notice these recurring messages to 'investors' trying to resell to a dealer:
-I can't pay you that, because I buy at wholesale and mark it up.
-you're not a dealer, you're not going to find someone who will pay you the price they will give me
-Jeez, this is old and cool but they just aren't valuable to anyone
-there used to be a huge market for this at the turn of the century. used to be. I'll give you a dollar cause i like it.
-wow, that's cool. too bad everyone who wanted one of these already died a while ago.
-sure there's a collector for this, but it's going to take me a long time to find that collector and i'm an expert dealer

Me too! Remember, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and other so-called "Reality TV" are scripted, produced and directed to be entertainment. Re-takes and 2nd unit inserts can make anything look or seem good. (or bad)

Also, Rick and the boys buy a lot of worthless crap that never gets mentioned again. His LA auction trip was classic - his items sold for so much less than he paid, his own estimate was he was 100K in the red.
And, the "Shoeless" Joe Jackson signature, $20K and it was el-fake-o.

Sorry to be OT, but those shows should be up-front and indicate they're created to be entertainment not a documentary or a true verite 'day in the life.' BTW, Chum Lee must have a screw loose and should have his head examined.

Back to the thread,
Mark

$20 is too much. Does it have the "flat 4" bezel?

Really?? Hell, if they were $20, I might even buy two of them!

That is a fair price if it is truly complete, unpolished and like new. I think it’s a better bet than a lot of watches you could buy for 20k.

I bought and sold one last year and made a few k in 6 months.

However, as a pure investment over 50 years I’d choose the stock market.

An investment in a good watch yes. An investment investment no, not a chance

The wording in this post could be adjusted to: is it a good investment to buy xyz item for top dollar at the peak of market height?

Sure the market could always go higher, but I think the number of buyers for $20k+ SS watches is more likely to contract than expand. That’s just me though, I’m a pessimist

Buy $20k worth of a blue chip stock and stick the stock certificates in your safe. They are far more likely to be worth more in 2053 than the watch.

you may be right on this but my experience tells me any shares can fall when there is a piece of bad news. i lost $600k in paper (30% of my portfolio) early this year when there was a rumor that US was going into a recession. But a Rolex watch notably a daytona will not fall by 20 - 30% over a few weeks. If you have spare cash and love Rolex watches, why not invest in them? I have since realized some profits and bought a dozen of coveted watches.

If you have to ask if a watch is a good 'financial' investment, you have no place spending 20k on a watch.

Nobody knows, but collectible watches are like stocks...for some reason people like to jump on the bandwagon when the price is high. This watch seemingly was a good buy 2 years ago at $8,000. No way would I buy today for $20,000!
Remember...buy low!

These watches were $5,100 new. I got one 2 months past the date. Early F. They are great to own since new. After that I think buying in is way to high. Your money but if you have them keep them. If paying now is way to much. Wow. No.

I have no doubt these watches will hit insane prices.

No, it isn’t like that...and judging by your avatar, I can tell it would be difficult to have an objective conversation with you as to why that is

Unless I’m mistaken, I am under the impression that vintage daytonas are so costly is mainly due to extremely low original production numbers. They are actually scarce which makes the baseline cost of admission much higher if you want to get into one.

A 16610lv is not even in the same scarcity universe as a vintage Paul Newman Daytona.

For a long long term hold as you say its certainly one to go for. 20k front end money is very high though unless thats a flat 4 bezel kermit
