No real reason to surprise a non player with a tackle. This mascot may not have been hurt bad but the next one might be and tackling a mascot is a cheap move anyway.

A bigger question is how this incident resulted in an argument about higher education.

If they're allowed to get away with unwantedly hurting people it hurts the sport and the team. You certainly have taken this hard. The mascot thought it was all in fun. Plenty of video shows him brushing it off and giving back what he got.
